SHAKER: SPAWN #232 E.W.U. Eastern Washington University (EWU) Grad McFarlane Variant (2008) sold a CGC 9.6 for $1,666. This is an exceptionally hard variant to find in high condition (a rough estimated 400 copies). But, what do you expect when they get handed out to a group of college kids who could care less about comics. The crazy thing is, this isn’t even close to the highest sale ever. A near mint raw copy sold just this past December for $4,500. So, that 9.6 kind of seems like a pretty awesome deal. When looking for it, look for the “E.W.U Grad Special” bar in red at the top of the cover. (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: HOUSE OF SECRETS #92 sold a CGC 7.5 for $2,750. While it seems like Swamp Thing is JUST starting to become relevant, this Bernie Wrightson cover is at the top of most collector’s want lists. We’ve mentioned this book in our first newsletter, but with the value continuing to increase, it felt worth noting again. Here’s the big question… how well will this do after the SWAMP THING show releases? (Find on eBay)

CONTENT NEWS: Mark Millar’s Netflix deal is beginning to get solid development information with the official announcement of REBORN, starring Sandra Bullock. When the book was released, it was met with high praise and seemed like a no-brainer for content development. However, Mark Millar books have had a long history of being abandoned early on the series for another, leaving fans burned by unfinished books with tons of potential. Netflix made an overall deal back in July to develop several of Millar’s books for the streamer. This led to hesitant market speculation. Knowing the history of how Millar’s books spike and drop, this didn’t move the needle for many of his titles. However, this more current and solid news with attached talent definitely contributed to the current HOT/MOVER trends for the standard cover and REBORN’s variants. Cover H by Todd McFarlane is seeing the most love and prices have jumped from $20 to the current $40 ($80 as we wrote above in this newsletter). The standard cover moved the most amount of copies and jumped from $3 to now $14. (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: SPAWN #185 B&W Whilce Portacio Variant (2008) sold a CGC 9.6 for $3,800. Here’s another incredibly hard to find variant that is sought out by Spawn collectors and very rarely shows up.  (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: PHANTOM LADY #17 (1948) sold a CGC 3.0 for $3,838. This is classic Matt Baker “Good Girl” art and is highly sought after. This also falls under the category of “bondage” covers that collectors also seek out. And yes, there’s a significant amount of bondage covers for your everyday kid comics back then. And yes, it was even an issue then… which eventually led to the comics code. (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #32 sold a raw NM copy for $1,983. Here’s a character that has skyrocketed in popularity among collectors over the past five years. This is a book that normally sees sales of the mid to high hundreds. Collectors want it and speculators are banking on the character to eventually show up in the MCU at some point. There’s currently no stopping this book. (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: BATMAN #608 Jim Lee RRP Variant (2002) sold a CGC 9.8 for $4K. The former king of variants. For over a decade, this variant held the top ranking of the most valuable modern variant (now taken over by Amazing Spider-Man #667 Dell’Otto variant). This classic and awesome variant done by Jim Lee was given out at the Diamond Retailer Roundtable Program in 2002 and was an instant must for every Jim Lee fan, Batman fan, and variant chaser. If you have one, we’re seriously jealous. (Find on eBay)

SHAKER/MOVER/HOT: BATTLE ANGEL ALITA #1 (1992) is getting large spikes in prices all thanks to the slick new trailers that released over the past month or two. What was once a $1 bin book is now a solid $100+ raw book. (Find on eBay)

CONTENT NEWS: THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY Official Trailer launched today and it looks fantastic. The trailer is getting all the cheap copies sold and should start spiking. (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #1 J.G. Jones 1:25 Variant sold a CGC 9.8 for $800. This is the second highest sale ever since the highest sale ever back in November, which sold for $815. This variant was always difficult to find and commanded around $100 five years ago. When GOTHAM CITY SIRENS was announced, this book (both the standard cover and variant) had huge spikes. Even though this film was shelved to focus on BIRDS OF PREY instead, it still continues to increase. (Find on eBay)

MOVER/SHAKER/HOT: THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY #1 took a few days after the trailer release to start seeing some significant movement. The rare Anniversary variant, limited to 1000 copies, is seeing some steady sales… but no big spike. These are selling for the same amount it did back in December. This is the same for the standard cover. MORE copies are selling, but just not making the big leaps that a new trailer usually creates.

Sunday, 1/27/19

SHAKER: SPIDER-GWEN (Vol. 2) #16 Dave Johnson Variant saw two CGC 9.8 sales of $500 and $519, which are the highest graded prices yet. Off of a successful film with both Miles and Gwen, the filmmakers very subtly hinted at a possible budding romance. Hence, why this variant is seeing so much attention now.  (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: X-23 #1 Dell’Otto 1:25 Variant sold a CGC 9.8 for $1955. The crown jewel of X-23 fans. Yes, this sells for more than her first appearance is NYX #3. It’s catching up to the current queen of 1:25’s, Edge of Spider-Verse #2 Land variant. (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: VENOM: LETHAL PROTECTOR #1 Black Error Edition sold a NM+RAW copy for $999.99. We LOVE error books. They’re oddities, fun accidents and can often be a somewhat one-of-a-kind (dependent on the flaws). This “oops” happened when the red foil ran out at the end of production, creating just this black overlay (you can see the red from the original standard cover underneath). Like a few books we discussed above, this isn’t the highest sale ever (a raw sold for $1,502 in Dec. 2018 and a 9.8 sold for $4,800 in August 2018), but it’s a reminder to keep a look out for this.  (Find on eBay)

NEWS: BLACK PANTHER wins a SAG (Screen Actors Guild) award for outstanding performance by an ensemble. Between BLACK PANTHER and SPIDER-VERSE, it’s a great time to be a comic fan.

NEW: BIRDS OF PREY Teaser Trailer showing quick shots of Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), Black Mask (Ewan McGregor without the mask), Mr. Zsasz (Chris Messina) and of course more substantial shots of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). The teaser is just that… a quick “frame by frame” trailer to hold us over until the full trailer is released. Now, all of the above characters have been announced previously and each of their first appearances and key issues have all seen spikes. However, upon this trailer, HUNTRESS #1 is the only book seeing some movement right now. However, the rest should start any minute. (Find on eBay)
