WEEK IN REVIEW

July 22nd, 2019

San Diego Comic-Con week! We had a blast at SDCC this year (and were completely exhausted by the end of it). Leading up to SDCC, comic sales really slowed as SDCC books started rolling in throughout the week and weekend. So for this week’s review, we’ll focus strictly on SDCC exclusives and news. So put a cup of coffee on, this one’s a beast!

NEWS/ HOT/ MOVER: SPAWN #299 SDCC 2019 VARIANT (IMAGE) We’ll cover all the hot post SDCC comic exclusives. However, it’s day one (well, day two if you count preview night) and these are already sold out within 30 minutes of the con door opening. As you know, SPAWN has a huge fan base and sells really, really well (just look at our past newsletters). This SDCC marks the very first San Diego Comic-Con variant that Spawn has ever had… of which they limited to 500 copies. Behold, the new forever hot Spawn variant. (Find on eBay)

SDCC NEWS: THE WITCHER (DARK HORSE)

A trailer for THE WITCHER w/ Henry Cavill on Netflix hit SDCC today… and it looks fantastic.  This is a VERY solid $50 book. However, will this show boost sales even more like UMBRELLA ACADEMY did post-release?  Also, how is the impossible to find Stan Sakai variant still so low in comparison to the first print? (Find on eBay)

SDCC NEWS: GRIM JACK (FIRST)

During the Marvel panel, the Russos announced they’re working on producing a GRIM JACK film. This has seen an uptick in sales. However, the focus is on his first appearance in STARSLAYER #10 (First, 1983), which is trending at $90 raw. (Find on eBay)

SDCC NEWS: BATTLE OF THE PLANETS (GOLD KEY)

The Russos also LOOSELY announced that they’re “looking into revitalizing the beloved cartoon series” and expressed an interest in directing the project if it’s live-action. Sales for high-grade copies have always sold well, however, today’s news did create a spike in sales and price.  (Find on eBay)

SDCC NEWS: SHE COULD FLY #1 (DARK HORSE)

Dark Horse’s SHE COULD FLY by Christopher Cantwell and Martin Morazzo has been picked up by AMC. If you recall, Netflix recently made a first-look deal with all Dark Horse titles. This must have been in motion previous to that deal… unless Netflix passed on the title and allowed Dark Horse to pitch it elsewhere. Sales have been hitting $18. (Find on eBay)

SDCC NEWS: SNOWPIERCER TV SHOW (TITAN)

TBS announced that they’re making a TV show out of the Graphic Novel turned Film (which starred Chris Evans). Since this was a graphic novel, sales are non-existent. Regardless, this stars Jennifer Connelly… so we’re “all aboard”. (Find on eBay)

NEWS: MARVEL SDCC HALL H PANEL

Wow, FINALLY we have confirmed MCU films and shows! And man, we could devote this whole review just to those. However, we know you’ve probably read a ton of coverage on this already, so let’s roll through it with the books that are heating up because of the news:

  • ETERNALS (film)
    • Of course, we all knew this one was coming. Collectors have been all over this for a while now. However, the big surprise was Angelina Jolie as Thena and NOT Sersi. Additional cast announced: Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite and Don Lee as Gilgamesh aka “The Forgotten One”. Release date announced was announced as November 6, 2020.
      • ETERNALS #1 (Marvel, 1976): First-team appearance and origin of The Eternals. First appearance of Ikaris, Kro, Brother Tode and Margo Damian. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS

  • THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (Disney+)
    • Anthony Mackie as Captain America and Sebastian Stan returning as The Winter Soldier. Also announced, Daniel Brühl will return as Baron (Helmut) Zemo.

  • WANDAVISION (Disney+)
    • Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprise their MCU roles as Wanda Maximoff and Vision. Kevin Feige revealed that Teyonah Parris will be playing the adult Monica Rambeau. Unknown if she will take on one of her many comic book mantles as Captain Marvel, Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum.

  • LOKI (Disney+)
    • Tom Hiddleston returns as the god of mischief.

  • DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS (film)
      • Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Stephen Strange and will connect directly with WandaVision on Disney +. In theaters May 7, 202.
        • No significant movement on any specific title yet. However, DOCTOR STRANGE #67 (Marvel, 1984) has hit our MOVERS and HOT lists as it is seeing some light market movement due to Blade’s appearance… with speculation, MCU’s new Blade might also first appear in this film (rumor). (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

  • WHAT IF…? (Disney+)
    • We’re REALLY looking forward to seeing this. This will feature THE WATCHER and mark his first MCU appearance. First up is previously announced Peggy Carter as Captain America storyline.
      • This series will feature many re-appearances of previous MCU characters as there are a huge amount of alternate stories to mine from. Either way, it sounds like a lot of fun! Be sure to WATCH out for this one.

  • HAWKEYE (Disney+)
    • Jeremy Renner’s Ronin and Kate Bishop announced to be the focus of this new series. After the failed Kate Bishop speculation with ENDGAME (everyone thought the young archer in the trailer was Kate, which turned out to be Hawkeye’s daughter).
      • Market Confusion: YOUNG AVENGERS PRESENTS #6 (Marvel, 2008): Many collectors think this is Kate’s first appearance as Hawkeye. Kate actually gives herself the HAWKEYE moniker in Young Avengers #12. In this issue of Young Avengers Presents #6, Clint Barton gives Kate his official blessing to use the name HAWKEYE. This issue came out almost 2 years after Young Avengers #12. (Find on eBay

  • THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER (film)
    • Natalie Portman announced to take the mantle of THOR. In theaters November 5, 2021. Across the market, this news moved sales/books the most:
      • WHAT IF? #10 (Marvel, 1978) – Features an out of cannon Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir as the character Thordis. Not quite the 1st Jane Foster as THOR, yet this saw a massive spike in both sales and price. (Find on eBay
      • HAWKEYE VS. DEADPOOL #0 (Marvel, 2014): Highly debated first cameo of new female Thor (alongside Spider-Gwen). Creators mentioned that these are trick or treaters during Halloween. (Find on eBay

  • BLACK WIDOW (film)
    • Scarlett Johansson reprises her MCU role as BLACK WIDOW. Joining her is David Harbour as Alexei (AKA The Red Guardian), Florence Pugh as Yelena, O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina/Iron Maiden. In theaters May 1, 2020.

  • BLADE (film)
    • Mahershala Ali announced as BLADE. It’s very exciting to see the character who started all this Marvel film madness enter the official MCU.

More MCU news due to come with August’s D23 (with rumors of FANTASTIC FOUR, CAPTAIN MARVEL: SECRET INVASION, NAMOR, KAMALA KAHN (AKA MS. MARVEL) and MOON KNIGHT). Stay tuned!

SDCC 2019 HOT EXCLUSIVES:

San Diego Comic-Con is known to have some of the most in-demand convention variants every year. Many attendees pay for their SDCC trips by re-selling these exclusives. As the SDCC dust settles, here are some of SDCC 2019’s top-performing exclusives. Keep in mind, there are MANY exclusives that are selling above cost (in fact, most tend to sell for double the buy-in cost … at least for the first week or two after SDCC). However, the ones below had the most attention and highest sales. In order of most valuable:

  • B&W TRUE BELIEVERS SILVER SURFER: BLACK #2 SDCC VARIANT (MARVEL): The most exclusive and elusive SDCC book is potentially the priciest. This is rumored to be a B&W version of the SDCC Marvel Panel Giveaway. SO much is unknown about this book (how limited, where/how it was handed out, etc.). But the rumors are out there. (It’s so niched that we couldn’t even find an image for it on CovrPrice at the time we wrote this)
    • LIMITED TO: N/A
    • BUY IN: Free (handed out to VERY select attendees)
    • MARKET VALUE: $NA, est. $500+

  • WALKING DEAD #192 CGC SS KIRKMAN & ADLARD (IMAGE): We don’t track SS graded books, but this is worth mentioning as it was an exclusive that attendees tried to get. They only offered a handful each day.
    • LIMITED TO: NA
    • BUY IN: $192
    • MARKET VALUE: $449

  • MARVEL SDCC 2019 PANEL SILVER SURFER: BLACK #2 (MARVEL): This hard to get Marvel Panel giveaway was only handed out to cosplayers and attendees who answered audience questions correctly. Not to mention that attendees waiting for HALL H had to stand in line for around 15 hours! Indeed, this was not an easy book to get. (Find on eBay)
    • LIMITED TO: NA
    • BUY IN: FREE (selectively given out at Marvel panels)
    • MARKET VALUE: $175

  • G.I. JOE ULTIMATE VARIANT SDCC BUNDLE (IDW):  We won’t track this on CovrPrice since it’s in a bundle, but this set of SNAKE EYES variants included 5 bonus exclusives only available in this set.
    • LIMITED TO: N/A
    • BUY IN: $200
    • MARKET VALUE: $288

    • BUY IN: $10
