WEEK IN REVIEW

September 16th, 2019

Welcome to CovrPrice’s comic Week In Review! This week we call out the (potential) return of Tank Girl, some Deadpool Hip-Hop covers, and riding off of the Disney+ announcement, we outline a bunch of Young Avengers first appearances. Enjoy!

Tuesday, 9/10/19

SHAKER: RESIDENT EVIL #1 (MARVEL, 1996) With a new TV series, based on this massively popular game series, coming to Netflix, prices are really starting to heat up for this hard to find first issue. Today, a CGC 9.8 sold for $405.  Which makes this the highest sale to date. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: TANK GIRL #1 (DARKHORSE, 1991) Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, picked up the rights for a new TANK GIRL today. If we had to put money on a comic series never seeing new content, this would have been at the top of the list. This option, of course, doesn’t mean it will happen… but if anyone could make this work it would be Ms. Robbie. With this news, this issue had it’s highest sale ever at $800 for a CGC 9.8. TANK GIRL’s first appearance was in DEADLINE #1 (DEADLINE PUBLICATIONS, 1988) which also had a big sale today of $700 for a CGC 6.5. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

MOVER/SHAKER/HOT: YOUNG AVENGERS #1 (MARVEL, 2005) Actress Hailee Steinfeld was announced today to play the role of Kate Bishop in the Disney+ streaming HAWKEYE show. With other rumors of HULKLING appearing in one of the Disney+ shows, many “feel” that Marvel is building up to a YOUNG AVENGERS announcement. Back in our January 22, 2019 Newsletter, we covered YOUNG AVENGERS pretty thoroughly. If you recall, at the time, the new ENDGAME trailer hit and showed a young archer that was thought to be Kate Bishop. We now know it was actually Clint Barton’s daughter Lila. Well, at the time, prices went nuts and now “wrong spec” has turned back into “hot spec.” Granted, keep in mind that any plans for YOUNG AVENGERS is still unconfirmed. Since we don’t have that 1/22/19 newsletter archived, here are the key YOUNG AVENGERS issues we highlighted in that breakdown:

*Wiccan/ Billy Kaplan and Speed/ Tommy Shephard were revealed In Children’s Crusade #6, that Billy and Tommy are the genetic reincarnations of her formerly deceased sons. Their first appearances (as just “Billy and Tommy”) were in VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH #12 (Vol. 2, 1986). We could go into how Wanda created them into existence via tapping into the soul of Mephisto via her powers, how Mephisto then reabsorbed them and then who’s souls were freed by Franklin Richards. However, it’s super complicated and could probably spend this entire article describing it. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR #7 – BRIGMAN VARIANT (MARVEL, 2016) We mentioned the MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR #13 1:25 variant last week. Well, #7 received some heat this week with today’s raw sale of $124.95. This was selling for $39.95 in August and went for as low as $3 in September 2018. It’s interesting how collectors are looking past the hotter first issue and going for these harder to find variants.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: TWO-GUN KID #60 (MARVEL, 1962) Today’s sale of $2433.18 for a CGC 8.0 is our highest sold copy for this classic story by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby. It also features the first appearance of the “new” Two-Gun Kid (Matt Hawk), who held the title of the TWO-GUN KID character until 2010 and had affiliations with The Avengers. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

MOVER/SHAKER/HOT: HARBINGER #1 (VALIANT, 1992) It was announced today that Paramount Studios picked up the rights to a HARBINGER film from Sony Pictures. With BLOODSHOT in post-production, this separation kills the expected appearance of Harbinger characters within the Vin Diesel film. Obviously, this also destroys any large scale Valiant connected franchise. We would expect prices to drop with this news, however, this studio switch has reignited sales and values for this flagship Valiant title. A CGC 9.8 hit $1,299.99 and raws are back up to $100. This change of hands has kicked off plenty of questions surrounding the quality of the BLOODSHOT film and why Sony would shake HARBINGER loose before it even released the film. SHAKER: DEADPOOL #45 – SKOTTIE YOUNG RUN THE JEWELS VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015)  This variant is a favorite among Deadpool collectors and has always been pricey. Today we saw a raw copy sell for $230, yet the highest ever is a tie between a $300 raw sale from July 2018 and a 9.6 sale of $300 on August 13, 2019. This all-black cover is extremely tough to get a 9.8 in.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: NOVA #1 FRANCESCO MATTINA 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2016) With continued NOVA MCU speculation, collectors have been looking at the harder to find variants… and there aren’t many. This Mattina 1:50 variant is taking the lead with today’s raw sale of $149, which is about 3x higher than it was at the beginning of this year. The first price jump for this book started in August when it hit $399.99 for a CGC 9.8. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: CAPTAIN MARVEL #14 – CONNER 1:30 (MARVEL, 2013) This issue (as we all know by now) is the first appearance (cameo) of Kamala Kahn (aka Ms. Marvel). This Amanda Conner variant is the Queen of modern variants, cemented with today’s $1,999 raw sale. That raw sale is catching up to the highest sale ever of a CGC 9.6 for $2,733. Imagine what a 9.8 could do.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Friday, 9/13/19

SHAKER: DEADPOOL #2 – MIKE HAWTHORNE 1:100 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015)  Yep, another Deadpool book.  With all the various Hip Hop covers, this was one of the few to wield any incentive ratios, let alone a 1:100. Whether you’re a Deadpool fan or a Vanilla Ice “To the Extreme” album fan (and obviously the two go hand in hand), this variant is a must. Though, it’s getting a bit out of reach with today’s $255.99 raw sale. The highest belongs to a CGC 9.8 that went for $355.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Saturday, 9/14/19

SHAKER: THE SENTRY #1 – ROSEN HOMAGE VARIANT (MARVEL, 2000) The first appearance of THE SENTRY has been selling well for a while now, with all covers getting price bumps. However, this Kirby Homage is leaping forward with today’s raw sale of $99. Most sales are around $40 to $70, so this could be an outlier. However, we feel it’s legit with The Sentry’s return in this week’s release (9/18) of BLACK PANTHER AND THE AGENTS OF WAKANDA #1  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: HARVEY COMICS LIBRARY #1: TEENAGE DOPE SLAVES (HARVEY, 1952) Long before Speedy did drugs on the cover of Green Lantern/Green Arrow #85, this cover featured hypodermic needle use first (along with an awesome hilarious title). This book is VERY hard to find and rarely comes to market. Today, a collector shelled out $1,200 for a CGC 4.5.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: ZOOT COMICS #14A (FOX, 1948) This is simply a classic Matt Baker cover that also rarely shows up. Today a CGC 7.0 sold for $1,040. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Sunday, 9/15/19

SHAKER: RICK AND MORTY #1 GOONIES RYAN HILL VARIANT (ONI PRESS, 2015) With Rick & Morty books heating up, this Bridge City “Goonie” Homage sold today for $105 raw. However, it’s worth noting that the highest raw sales belong to two $119.99 purchases when the new season was confirmed back in May 2019. Our favorite Rick & Morty #1 variant is this one.   (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Monday, 9/16/19

SHAKER: VENUS #19 (MARVEL, 1952) Here’s an awesome Bill Everett pre-code horror cover that marked the last issue of the series. This is still one of the more affordable-ish PCH books. Take for example today’s sale of $760 for a CGC 4.0. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: TEEN-AGE ROMANTICS #42 (ST. JOHN, 1955) Yep, another Matt Baker cover that was also the last Pre-code issue for this series.  This sold a CGC 4.0 today for $3,100. (Find on eBay)
