WEEK IN REVIEW

October 28th, 2019

Welcome to our spooky HALLOWEEN Newsletter! This week we’re forgoing our normal “Top MOVERS/SHAKERS” type list to focus on some fun Halloween-centric books that have seen some notable sales recently (so, not every Halloween book will be on here). Now, while many books can be considered “Halloween” due to them being a horror title OR feature horror-centric characters, we’re going to focus on Halloween centric books rather than the overall “Horror” genre.  Heck, pre-code horror titles could EASILY take over the list…. and it would be a massive list. So… grab a piece of candy and check out these spooky titles.

BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN #1 (DC, 1996)

Not only is this a great Halloween book, but it also has some heat to it! It’s been rumored that the Robert Pattison Batman film follows this specific Batman story. Upon that rumor, values shot up pretty quickly. On 10/7/19, a CGC 9.8 sold for $195. The highest sale ever was a $300 sale for a 9.8 on 9/14/19.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

CATWOMAN #35 (DC, 2014)

This may not have a particularly high value, yet it does sell for double cover price… and sometimes even triple. We wanted to add to this to the list simply because it’s a fun Halloween cover that captures the fun of Halloween, rather than trying to be spooky or scary (some of us still sleep with the lights on).  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

COMIC CAVALCADE #12 (DC 1945)

Like Catwoman #35, here’s FLASH, WONDER WOMAN & GREEN LANTERN all enjoying Halloween together. Lucky for them, they don’t even need a costume. A CGC 7.0 sold on 10/1/19 for $749.99. Raws will typically sell for around $200. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

ELVIRA HOUSE OF MYSTERY #11 (DC, 1986)

If you’re a child of the 80’s, then everyone’s favorite Halloween crush was easily Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Granted, she showcased fun Horror films all year, yet she was synonymous with Halloween. Then take a master of pin-up art, Dave Stevens and have him do a cover… and you have a collectible like this one. Raws typically sell for $10 and NM copies will hit closer to $30. However, this all-black cover is incredibly tough to find in 9.8, hence a $275 CGC 9.8 sale back on 7/21/19. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

And for those of you nostalgic few, here’s Elvira at her best: check it out

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

FREDDY KRUEGER’S A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET #1 (OCT. 1989, MARVEL)

Freddy Krueger doesn’t have a ton of expensive books, but this classic Joe Jusko cover is as close as you get. A recent raw copy sold for $35, with a CGC 9.8 selling for $269 on December 13, 2018.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET #6 (INNOVATION, 1992)

The top-selling FREDDY book goes to this random and hard to find issue. It’s not very clear WHY it sells so well, but it really can hit big sales like this past June 21st sale of $154.99 raw. High-grade copies will easily sell for over $100, while mid-grade copies sell for about $60.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

FRIDAY THE 13th

So, Friday the 13th/ Jason have a TON of rare and hard to find books that have significant value. He’s easily one of the most popular slashers. Also, Avatar Press is really good at generating special variants that we’re highly sought after when they first came out. As a decade (+) has passed, these books are particularly challenging to find:

FRIDAY THE 13TH: JASON VS. JASON X FOIL VARIANT (AVATAR PRESS, 2006)

A rare copy sold for $69.99 raw on 9/21/19  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

FRIDAY THE 13TH SPECIAL EDITION PLATINUM FOIL VARIANT (AVATAR PRESS, 2005)

A copy sold on August 25, 2019 for $54.99 raw.  (Find on eBay)

FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH #1 J. SCOTT CAMPBELL 2nd PRINT (DC, 2008)

Scott Campbell drawing 3 iconic Horror stars is really reason enough for this book to have any traction. Sales vary, though the most recent raw sale was August 26th for $28.99. We have never seen a graded sale for this one. We should note that this 2nd print features all 3 of the 1st print covers (Freddy, Jason, Ash). The three individual covers also sell really well and each can hit $20-$30 each.  The ASH cover actually hit a high raw sale of $59.99 back in August 2019. The FREDDY cover is one of the few CGC 9.8’s we captured for any of the covers, which sold for $139.99 this past September 22, 2019. We should also note that issues #2 through 5 ALSO can sell for over $10. So, if you see this series for cheap (we find them in $1 bins all the time), grab them.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

HALLOWEEN

Like Friday the 13th, the King of Halloween is Michael Myers and the titular holiday film (yes, “titular is a real word). He also has multiple books that sell for premiums:

HALLOWEEN #1 (CHAOS COMICS, 2000)

(Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Halloween #1 from Chaos Comics is a big-money book for ALL covers:

  • STANDARD COVER: Prices are all over the place on this cover (dependent on the condition of course). Most sales are around $20, with NM copies selling for $30. A CGC 9.4 recently sold for $100. So, the highest sale ever for CGC 9.8 sold for $180.23 back in December 2018 seems like a great deal now.

  • PREMIUM GLOW IN THE DARK PUMPKIN VARIANT: Early 2019 you could have picked up this limited to 6,666 copies variant for $25 or less. In June 2019 it hit $99.95 raw and then $149 in July 2019. That was the last sale for this very hard to find variant.

  • MICHAEL MEYERS MEGA CHROMIUM VARIANT: We’ve never seen this sell raw. The most recent sale for this limited to 2,500 copy variant was $225 for CGC 9.8. Raws would most likely sell for around $75.

  • ASHCAN: Oh man is this book rare. Limited to 66 copies, this is near IMPOSSIBLE to find. And when it does, it goes for big $. Limited to 66 copies, the last sale was back in November 2018 and sold raw for $182.50. Which is a deal compared to its biggest sale ever of $735 in August 2018. Let us know if you ever come across a copy!

HALLOWEEN: ONE GOOD SCARE (UNKNOWN PUBLISHER, 2003)

This “Limited Edition” Halloween book varies greatly in price. It has sold from $14.99 to $150 raw. Most sales average out to around $40. A CGC 9.8 sold for $200 one year ago today on 10/31/18.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

MORE HALLOWEEN TITLES

HOWLING REVENGE OF THE WEREWOLF QUEEN #1 BILL SIENKIEWICZ 1:20 VARIANT (SPACE GOAT PRODUCTIONS, 2017)

Bill Sienkiewicz has a large (and growing) fanbase. His covers are highly sought out. Many collectors don’t know about this hard to find 1:20 variant. It’s a fantastic cover and sold for $74.99 raw on August 4th, 2019.  (Find on eBay)

TRANSFORMERS: GENERATION 2 GHOST MACHINE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL EDITION (MARVEL, 1993)

While not overtly “Halloween”, if you search for Halloween titles, this always comes up. A CGC 9.6 recently sold for $82.10. However, raw copies are the way to go. They easily sell between $40 to $60. The highest sale ever was $260 for a CGC 9.8.  (Find on eBay)

QUEENS OF HALLOWEEN #1 PLATINUM VARIANT (DIAMOND, 1996)

Now, the standard ashcan for this sells for $1, however incredibly hard to find Platinum variant sold a CGC 9.2 for $299.99 on 8/18/19. We’ve never see a raw copy sell. There are two copies of eBay, which are both listed well over that price.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT 3D #1 (ECLIPSE, 1985)

We love, love, love Dave Stevens. He was the best at modern-day pin-up art, and this cover is a must for fans of his. AND it’s pretty cheap. Raws sell for a few dollars (NM+ copies fetching up to $15), while a 9.8 goes for around $100.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

TREEHOUSE OF HORROR #1 (BONGO, 1995)

The Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror was a Halloween must-watch. They’re a ton of fun to revisit every Halloween. With nostalgia driving sales of this book, it can sell for $10 to $15. Nothing crazy, but definitely worth grabbing from $1 bins.  (Find on eBay)

Man, this brings back memories: check it out

TOXIC CANDIE #1 (SELF PUBLISHED, 2009)

This self-published Dan Mendoza book is practically a unicorn of comics. It’s been debated that this came out BEFORE the self-published ZOMBIE TRAMP #1 that then went on to be a massive hit for Action Lab and Mendoza. Almost ALL copies are signed and VERY rarely pops up. There was a recent sale in September 2019 that went for $385.  (Find on eBay)

TRICK R TREAT (DC, 2009)

Based on the Halloween Horror Film, this book was only given out at 2009 conventions to promote the movie. It sells for way more than you would think. It recently sold for $69.99 this October 19, 2019. Definitely don’t pass it over in back issue bins.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

VAMPIRELLA 2006 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL ARTHUR SUYDAM VIRGIN VARIANT (HARRIS, 2006)

Vampirella is immensely popular lately. Her hardest to find variants are skyrocketing to new heights month after month. This virgin variants is a perfect example. In 2018, it sold for under $40. Now, it’s getting $150 raw and recently sold on 8/14/19 for $525.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

WALT DISNEY’S DONALD DUCK #26 (DELL 1952)

We’re sure there are more Disney Halloween covers out there. Disneyland and Disneyworld make a pretty big deal over the Holiday now. However, all we could find was this classic CARL BARKS cover. It recently sold a CGC 6.5 on 9/30/19 for $149.99. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Remember, this isn’t a definitive Halloween comic list. These were just some fun sales we noticed recently while we write our weekly newsletters (which we hope you enjoy!). There are PLENTY of great Halloween covers out there. Let us know what your favorite covers are!
