WEEK IN REVIEW

January 17th, 2020

Welcome to our weekly Newsletter! This week we call out some great dollar bin finds, we talk about a new Witchblade variant WE didn’t even know about, and serve up some potential Hulkling rumors. Let’s do this!

COVRPRICE DAILY SHAKERS

SHAKER: DIME PRESS #4 (DIME PRESS, 1993) This was one of those “what just happened” sales for us. This week saw a CGC 9.6 sell via auction for $2,999. We’ve never seen a 9.8 sale, however, the last 9.6 sale was significantly less at $1,199.95 in March 2019. This was quite a jump up in value! Raws are also on the upswing. Is there HELLBOY news we missed? (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: GHOST-SPIDER #2 PEACH MOMOKO 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2019)  Peach is getting some heat! While Spider-Gwen goes up in value, it makes sense that her harder to find variants will as well. This sold for a huge $132.50 raw this week! (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: FOUR COLOR #9 (DELL, 1942) Carl Banks & Disney (specifically for Donald) are synonymous. He was both writer & artist on almost all of Disney’s key titles for decades. This hard to find and highly sought after issue marks the first Carl Banks Donald Duck issue. This sale went for $1,170 for CGC 4.5. This is a fantastic investment book. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: RICK & MORTY #1 (ONI, 2015)  While this week’s CGC 9.8 sale of $1,050 isn’t the highest (which was $1,199.99), it’s pretty darn close. To ever imagine this as a $1K 9.8 for a first print would have been considered insane… yet here we are. (“Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!”) It’s hard to believe that this is one of the most valuable modern-day (non-variant) comics. Raw copies are a little more reasonable. High-grade copies sell for around $200.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: SUSPENSE COMICS #3 (TEMERSON / HELNIT / CONTINENTAL, 1944) This is the ONLY sale we’ve ever tracked for this classic Schomburg Bondage Cover. It sold for a huge $13,700 for a CGC 6.5.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: THE TRANSFORMERS #1 – CANADIAN PRICE VARIANT (MARVEL, 1984)  So, we know that TF #1 in 9.8 sells for about $500+, yet raws sell for $20 to $50. Well, this VERY hard to find price variant sold raw this week for $191.54. The highest price goes to a CGC 9.6 sale in October 2018 for $385, which seems like a great deal now.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: VAMPI #8 J. SCOTT CAMPBELL VARIANT (HARRIS, 2001)  Here’s a reasonably priced variant that you can easily find at conventions and maybe your LCS. It’s a hard to find J. Scott Campbell Vampi cover that sells for $50 raw. Keep an eye out! (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: WITCHBLADE #1 – DIAMOND RETAILER GOLD EDITION (IMAGE, 1995) We know a thing or two about comics, but still some books come into our awareness as we write/research these newsletters. We had no idea that Witchblade #1 had a gold-stamped Diamond retailer edition! Apparently, some collectors did as they bought one raw for $102.09. And now our comic addictions demand we find one as well. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: ZATANNA #5 BRIAN BOLLAND 1:10 VARIANT (DC, 2010) Over the past year, this variant has slowly been creeping up in value, leading up to this week’s highest raw sale of $79.99. In 9.8, it sells for $350. This variant is out there and often gets left behind the more noticeable Adam Hughes #11 & #13-17 covers. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

RUMORED / OPTIONED

RUMORED/OPTIONED:  YOUNG AVENGERS #1 (MARVEL, 2005)  No big rumor or options news this week. However, some casting sheets for “WandaVision” leaked out this week, leading many to assume that the casting in question is for “Teddy” Altman aka Hulkling. The casting request is for a “16-23-year-old male to play a Skrull who requires help from S.W.O.R.D. in order to remain safely on Earth.” So, take that for what you will. This isn’t the first time Hulkling has been mentioned as he was also rumored to be on “She-Hulk”.  Hulkling’s first appeared in YOUNG AVENGERS #1. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

WHAT THE WATCHER WATCHES

WATCHING:  ISOLA #1 (IMAGE, 2018) Like MONSTRESS, ISOLA is one of the most gorgeous books on the shelf (inside & out). It hasn’t moved much, but a book this good is overdue for some Hollywood attention (and no, this is not some hint). It’s one of those books that we happily pluck from $1 bins and back issues. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

DEAL OF THE WEEK

DEAL OF THE WEEK: BATMAN: ALMOST GOT ‘IM (WESTERN, 1993) So, when previous sealed-sets all sell for WELL over $300+ (and who’s previous recorded sale was for $800), this week’s sale of $187.50 seems like a huge deal for that buyer. Well played. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

KEY OF THE WEEK

KEY OF THE WEEK (#1): IRON MAN #55 (MARVEL, 1973)  So, while Thanos is gone from the MCU, he’s definitely not forgotten. The effects of his havoc through phase 3 will reverberate into Phase 4. This week had an INSANE sale of $8,100 via auction for a high grade raw. Maybe the bidding just got competitive as this is the highest raw sale we’ve ever recorded. Yet the highest sale ever goes to a CGC 9.8 for $8,181… just a mere $81 over this week’s RAW crazy sale. Our previous raw high goes to a $2,175 sale back in March 2018. So, this was a big surprise.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

KEY OF THE WEEK #2: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #101(MARVEL, 1971)Thanks to the new (and surprisingly decent) MORBIUS trailer, there was a BIG boom in sales for this already pricey first appearance of Morbius. This week even saw a high-grade raw sale of $520. Morbius is this week’s new heat! (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
