COVRPRICE COMIC BOOK SHAKERS

Every day CovrPrice’s Daily Shaker List calls out comics with the highest sales value sold that day. Throughout the week we pull the more interesting ones and elaborate on them here. Check out our sweet Shaker List here.

SHAKER: ADAM: LEGEND OF THE BLUE MARVEL #1 (MARVEL, 2008)

This is the week of books hitting all-new CRAZY highs. Starting it off is BLUE MARVEL, who had a CGC 9.8 sell for $1,325. BLUE MARVEL has such a small footprint in the Marvel comics universe and is a longshot for an MCU introduction, but his first appearance is one of the most valuable modern books. Keep in mind, there’s SO much potential in the hands of the right writer.

SHAKER: ALL-NEW MARVEL NOW! POINT ONE #1 MCNIVEN 1:75 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2014)

There’s been a lot of chatter around Kamala Kahn. It has been mentioned that Marvel is VERY close to making a casting decision. That mixed with expectations for Marvel to share new content news during SDCC AT HOME sent her first FULL appearance in this issue to a new high sale of $3,750 for a CGC 9.8. SDCC AT HOME ended up being a big disappointment as there was no BIG content news out of the event (actually, there was very little news overall). This sale was a flare of what we will expect to see when news is confirmed.

SHAKER: ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST – WRAITH #1 (MARVEL, 2007)

A rare CGC 9.9 sold for $1,199.99 this week. With 9.8’s selling for $350, that’s a pretty premium on a rare grade.

SHAKER: BLACK  KNIGHT #1 (MARVEL, 1955)

This first appearance and origin of the first BLACK KNIGHT, the moniker that Kit Harrington is taking up (as Dane Whitman) in THE ETERNALS, hit some big prices this week for some low grades. A CGC 1.8 sold this week for $2,400 and a CGC 1.0 for the same amount. This is notable since the highest sale we tracked was a CGC 6.0 that sold for $2,900.

SHAKER: EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2 DARK VERSION (MARVEL, 2014)

This week’s BIG sale of $1,575 for a CGC 9.8 for this dark “variant” can be the subject of debate. The debate lies in the dark background. This “dark” error is the result of print *variations* in the four-color printing process. Technically, you could take 4 copies of EOSV #2, lay them side to side and see a variance in the color printing. Some will be darker and some will be lighter. And yes, there are extremes on both sides. The key distinguishing mark of the darker version is how the buildings blend seamlessly into the black background. You should see no separation of color from the side of the building to the black background. You see the building, the side, and background all as the same. However, due to the subjective nature of this color variance, CGC doesn’t notate this error on the label or consider it a separate cover. This is just one of those things that will always be debated.

SHAKER: MARVEL COMICS #1000 DISNEY D23 RAMOS EXCLUSIVE (MARVEL, 2019)

Back when we had conventions, this D23 exclusive was incredibly hot. One year later, it hasn’t cooled down. In fact, this Mickey/Marvel just had its highest sale ever at $1,099.99 for a CGC 9.8. It has been a while since we’ve seen the ultra-rare B&W version of this variant.

SHAKER: NEGAN LIVES #1 RED FOIL VARIANT (IMAGE, 2020)

There’s some debate about where this variant originated from. Folks are saying that this red foil variant is an employee exclusive. Though, other sources have stated the following:

  1. It has a 500 print run
  2. It may have been sprinkled through Skybound box sets in their online store

So… basically, no one really knows as Skybound is staying pretty quiet. Regardless, this book is going for crazy prices like the $1,525 raw sale it had this week.

SHAKER: NEW ENGLAND NEWSLETTER #14 (NEW ENGLAND COMICS, 1986)

This is technically not a comic book, yet there’s a popular trend of collectors looking for first appearances that came out before the more official first appearance. This can range from advertisements in magazines, previews at the end of a comic, interviews, or in this case, a newsletter. The first official appearance of THE TICK was in THE TICK #1 Special Edition from March 1988 that predates THE TICK #1 by just a few months (June 1988). However, the true first appearance was in this newsletter dated July-August 1986, a full two years before. At the bottom left, you can see “Introducing The Tick” and includes a short Tick story and continues into Newsletter #15. CGC notes this as “First Appearance of The Tick” and notes the Special Edition as “First Appearance of The Tick in comics”. The newsletter hit an all-new high sale of $1,625.55 for a CGC 9.4.

SHAKER: OUTLAWED #1 ANA RUD 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2020)

Now here’s a variant you should call your LCS about. This came out this past March and was selling right around ratio at $50… until this week when a raw copy sold for $500. Fluke or a new high price variant? It does have 3 of the hottest Marvel characters that collectors are buying up right now: Miles Morales, Kamala Kahn, and Riri Williams. This is also a rare “out of costume” cover that we really haven’t seen for Kamala or Miles. The next sale will tell us more and confirm if this can maintain that super high price. However, this is going to be a tough book to find. Not many stores ordered 50 copies of this book to qualify for this incentive. BUT, there’s got to be some out there. Happy hunting!

SHAKER: SPAWN #1 (IMAGE, 1992)

We mentioned the premium that the WRAITH 9.9 received above. Well, while SPAWN #1 sells for about $120 in a 9.8, a rare 9.9 sold this week for a massive $4,850. Now THAT’S a high-grade premium.

(Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: SILK #1 STACEY LEE 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015)

This SILK variant ALSO hit a new high at $350 for a 9.8. With raws selling for $200, this will probably see another bump up in price.

(Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: SPIDER-MAN #1 SARA PICHELLI B&W COMICSPRO VARIANT (MARVEL, 2016)

This Comicspro variant does not come up too often. Well, a copy was listed this week and sold for $308 raw. Pre Miles Mania, these were selling for $24.99.

(Find on eBay)

SHAKER: STAR WARS: DARTH VADER #3 LAROCCA 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015)

You would think that some of these hot books would cool down… nope. This Larocca variant sold a CGC 9.8 for $700 this week, making that an all-time high. Honestly, there’s still plenty of room for this to grow.

SHAKER: STRANGE ACADEMY #1 JEROME OPENA VARIANT 1:50 (MARVEL, 2020)

With no content news and pure speculation, Strange Academy is moving ALL of its #1 variants at solid prices. However, this “Breakfast Club” homage is the clear winner with its CGC 9.8 sale of $850 this week, another new high sale.

(Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 – 3RD PRINT (MIRAGE, 1984)

Like others on this list, this also had an all-new high sale of $1,499.99 for a CGC 9.8. This book has been climbing all year. In May 2019, a 9.8 was selling for $860.

SHAKER: THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #2 ACUNA 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2012)

All things Knull related are going bonkers. This issue is the first appearance of Gorr the God Butcher and the Necrosword. This had a HUGE jump in price with a CGC 9.8 selling for $935. Wow!

(Find on eBay)

SHAKER: VENOM #4 3RD PRINT (MARVEL, 2018)

Seriously, KNULL is on fire for every cover he’s on. This week, this 3rd print saw raw copies almost double since last week at $119. This was only $25 at the beginning of the month.

RUMORED/OPTIONED: INVINCIBLE #1 (IMAGE, 2003)

Additional voice cast for INVINCIBLE released last week, featuring a large number of WALKING DEAD Alum and current cast. As reported by DEADLINE: “Lauren Cohan, Sonequa Martin-Green, Chad Coleman, Michael Cudlitz, Lennie James and Ross Marquand have joined the cast of the hour-long animated series from Kirkman, Cory Walker and artist Ryan Ottley. Kirkman revealed the new castings today during his [email protected] virtual panel. Cohan will voice War Woman, Coleman is Martian Man, Cudlitz portrays Red Rush, James is Darkwing, Marquand voices The Immortal & Aquarius and Martin-Green is Green Ghost.” This news helped push INVINCIBLE #1 to a new all-time high of $1,500 for a 9.8

RUMORED/OPTIONED: OBLIVION SONG (IMAGE, 2018)

IGN recently reported that OBLIVION SONG is still in active development: “The movie is still very much in development,” he said. “We’re working with our partners at Universal to bring this film to life. It is a slow-going process. We probably announced the development of it a little too soon, but it’s something that’s actively going on behind the scenes on a daily basis. I’m reviewing things and getting things in order, and progress is being made. Hopefully, there’ll be news very soon.”

RUMORED/OPTIONED:  PAPER GIRLS #1 (IMAGE, 2015)

Per Deadline, “Amazon Orders ‘Paper Girls’ Graphic Novel Adaptation To Series” which gave this a new high sale of $150 for a CGC 9.8. Now might be a great time to grab a copy.

SAN DIEGO [email protected]

SDCC AT HOME was… well… underwhelming. The exclusives were hard to track and most sold out instantly. IDW started things off with a limited number of copies on their on-line store. Each exclusive sold out and instantly sold for massive premiums on-line. Here were the front runners this weekend:

SDCC SHAKER: CANTO AND THE CLOCKWORK FAIRIES #1 SDCC VARIANT (IDW, 2020) – Selling for $75 (Cost $10, 300 copies were listed…unknown if that was the print run)

(Find on eBay)

SDCC SHAKER: MY LITTLE PONY/ TRANSFORMERS #1 SDCC VARIANT (IDW, 2020) – Selling for $150 to $200 (Cost $10, 285 copies were listed…. This one is a pretty big surprise.)

(Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SDCC SHAKER: SLEEPING BEAUTIES #1 PEACH MOMOKO SDCC VARIANT (IDW, 2020) Selling for $145 (Cost $10, 200 copies were listed… this makes sense since it was Peach… but man… that My Little Pony/ TF book is still crazy).

(Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SDCC SHAKER: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ANNUAL 2020 SDCC VARIANT (IDW, 2020) – Selling for $60 (Cost $10, 165 copies were listed)

WHAT THE WATCHER IS WATCHING

WATCHING: NEW AVENGERS #7 (MARVEL, 2005)

Add THE ILLUMINATI to the MCU rumor list. The Illuminati (Namor, Mr. Fantastic, Professor X, Iron Man, Black Bolt, and Dr. Strange) is being rumored to play a large role across MCU’s phase 4. As spec goes, this one makes a lot of sense. Half of these characters already exist and the other half are planned to be included. THE ILLUMINATI’s first appearance in this issue is really trending and selling for $30 raw. The Neal Adams variant is selling for $80! Since we like this spec, we’re watching this closely to see how this does. Granted, we’ll be watching it for a while as we don’t think we’ll get a confirmation for a while.

KEY COMIC OF THE WEEK

KEY OF THE WEEK: THE CROW #1 (CALIBER, 1989)

Seriously… what is going on with THE CROW? There is absolutely NO new content news and very little chatter around the character. A CGC 9.2 sold this week for $1,070. This is a pretty big jump when this grade was selling for $300. The old saying “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” is ringing in our ears.
