COVRPRICE COMIC BOOK SHAKERS

Every day CovrPrice’s Daily Shaker List calls out comics with the highest sales value sold that day. Throughout the week we pull the more interesting ones and elaborate on them here. Check out our sweet Shaker List here.

SHAKER: BATMAN BEYOND #1 (DC, 1999)

Man, with a recent rumor that DC is developing a BATMAN BEYOND film has REALLY set this book on fire. Two CGC 9.8s sold this week. One at $1,230.12 and another for a massive $1,358.33. At the beginning of the year a 9.8 was selling for $500, which seemed like a lot back then. A high grade raw copy also hit an all time high at $618.88. Imagine what can happen if this film is confirmed. While we’re on BATMAN BEYOND, there’s some debate over his first appearance in the DCU. Many are calling out BATMAN/ SUPERMAN #22 & #23 as his true first appearances. While the BATMAN BEYOND costume IS seen, the issue features various iterations of Superman and Batman characters in their various Multi-Earths. In issue #23 Bruce Wayne (via earpiece, calls this Batman Beyond “Tim” and not Terry. This hasn’t stopped collectors from buying these up. #22 is currently selling for $40 raw.

SHAKER: HAWKEYE #1 DAVID AJA 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2016)

With Kate Bishop confirmed to appear in the Disney HAWKEYE series, the heat from her first appearance is having a halo effect on key variants like this one. It’s been a steady $100 raw seller for the past couple weeks. However, this week it hit $389.99 for a CGC 9.8. While collectors are picking this up due to it being a great Kate Bishop cover, it’s also the 1st appearance of Ramona Watts, who later becomes Alloy (in 2019’s WEST COAST AVENGERS #9).

SHAKER: MEMETIC #1 – VIRGIN 1:20 VARIANT (BOOM!, 2014)

A couple of weeks ago, Seth Rogan was in the trades with the announcement of his comedy feature “An American Pickle” being picked up by HBO Max. In that announcement, his involvement with MEMETIC was also mentioned. That quick mention helped kick start sales for this hard to find virgin variant, landing a huge sale of $818.51 for a CGC 9.8

SHAKER: MONSTRESS #1 2ND PRINT (IMAGE, 2015)

This comic has been announced as optioned multiple times (most recently this book was confused with a title of the same name being developed at HBO max). While there hasn’t been any new confirmation, this 2nd print continues to increase. This week it hit an all-time high of $599 for a CGC 9.8.

SHAKER: NYX #3 (MARVEL, 2004)

Prior to the release of the film LOGAN in 2017, this first appearance of X-23 was hitting well over $1K for 9.8’s. It has since dropped to $700 in a 9.8 (granted, it does jump around in price). This week it finally hit $1K again for the first time in about a year and a half. X-23 is a character that’s VERY popular and here to stay, so this organic growth makes sense.

SHAKER: RESIDENT EVIL #1 (MARVEL, 1996)

A RESIDENT EVIL series is still in motion with Netflix. While there’s been no recent news, this 1st RESIDENT EVIL series is still going up in value with a new high sale this week of $499 for a CGC 9.8.

SHAKER: SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #1 (BOOM!, 2019)

Man, this series is MOVING. The standard cover hit $249 in a 9.8 and big $96 raw this week. The Frison FOC variant also had a great week, hitting $122.50 raw. These spikes in price are due to both being a fan favorite series AND the recent Boom!/ Netflix first-look deal. While this book wasn’t specifically announced in this deal, many are speculating (or hoping) that this is at the top of the list.

SHAKER: SPAWN #237 – TRADESMART MCFARLANE VARIANT (IMAGE, 2013)

With so much market heat across SO many books, we forget about SPAWN. Well this TRADESMART variant has really jumped up in price this week with an all-new high sale of $359 for a raw copy. This was selling for $65 this time last year. Not a bad increase at all.

SHAKER: STAR WARS JEDI: MACE WINDU (ONE-SHOT) (DARK HORSE, 2003)

This issue marks the first Appearance Of Asajj Ventress, a popular (yet complicated) character seen in the STAR WARS: CLONE WARS series. Her first appearance hit a big $124.99 raw for a NM copy. Asajj Ventress is a Dathomirian female who has been a slave, a Jedi Padawan, a Sith assassin, a Nightsister and a bounty hunter. Starting the CLONE WARS series as a Sith villain, she ends up fighting side by side with Ashoka. Speculation of MANDALORIAN season 2 borrowing heavily from CLONE WARS. While very unconfirmed, speculators are buying into her first appearance with the hope that she will appear. We hope she does!

SHAKER: STRIKEFORCE #1 – CHRISTOPHER NYCC 2019 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2019)

John Tyler Christopher’s awesome negative variants are VERY hot right now. Wolverine and Rogue have sent fans into Collector mode, trying to round up the set. This SPIDER-WOMAN variant is the new book getting up there in price with an all-new high sale of $200 raw. This cover looks fantastic next to Frison’s Spider-Woman #2 1:50 variant (see below) and Spider-Woman #3 Forbes 1:25 variant. Just a gorgeous set of red covers.

SHAKER: VENOM #3 (MARVEL, 2018)

Like Miles, there’s not much more to say about Knull. He’s insanely popular right now. ALL his key issues and covers are just going nuts. This core cover had a huge $247 raw sale and $502 CGC 9.8 sale this week. This was still well under $200 in a 9.8 a month ago. As we mentioned last week, the 1:25 Molina variant tried hard to overtake the 3rd print with a $799 CGC 9.8 sale. However, the 3RD PRINT still owns the lead with a CGC 9.8 sale of $875. Also, VENOM #4, the origin of Knull, is also moving up this week with a NM raw sale of $48. #4 2ND PRINT & #4 3RD PRINT are ALSO doing fantastic at about $40 each. 2020 is definitely the year of the subsequent printings.

SHAKER: X-23 #2 MIKE MAYHEW VAMPIRE 1:15 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2010)

Our friends at COMIC BOOK INVEST created a fantastic Mike Mayhew cover list. This Vampire cover has been (arguably) the most in-demand book he has drawn. It had an all-time new high sale of $450 for a CGC 9.8.

(As mentioned in our VARIANT WATCH ARTICLE at www.comicbookivest.com)

SHAKER: ZATANNA #5 BRIAN BOLLAND 1:10 VARIANT (DC, 2010)

With the rumor that ZATANNA is currently in development with DC, her first appearance heat has also spread to her hard to find variants. This 2010 series has a lot of them. Brian Bolland did variants for issue #1 through #6. However, this #5 variant is the hottest with an all-new high sale of $350 for a CGC 9.8 .

NEW RELEASE HEAT

NEW RELEASE HEAT: TMNT: LAST RONIN ASHCAN (IDW, 2020)

This ashcan has been reportedly free (dependent on your LCS… and probably not anymore) and were handed out to those who picked up TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #106. For those who did, we’re happy to see this selling for $40 (with a height of $50). It’s now selling for $20 as copies come to market. The Last Ronin series could be a major hit. We’re definitely excited about this one.

NEW RELEASE HEAT: CATWOMAN #23A (DC, 2020)

Author Blake Northcott has officially brought back SNOWFLAME to modern-day DC. This should get interesting. This issue also has a first appearance of CATGIRL (on cover A, inside, not named). With that one/two punch, this is trending at $20.

NEW RELEASE HEAT: FAITHLESS II #2 TULA LOTAY “ERROR” EROTICA CONNECTING VARIANT (BOOM!, 2020)

Due to a poly-bag error where the adult-only content censor was printed backwards… FULLY showing the VERY graphic cover in all its glory. It’s unconfirmed if this was recalled. Regardless, this is selling for $20. Since only the bag is the error, I don’t think this is one that will have long-term retention.

NEW RELEASE HEAT: SPIDER-WOMAN #2 JENNY FRISON 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2020)

Granted this variant JUST came out, but man is it hot. Frison knocked this one out of the park. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s selling for $175 raw… but I think this one is going to get pricey. Now, if we can just find a darn copy.

NEW RELEASE HEAT: VENOM #25 STEGMAN 2ND PRINT (MARVEL, 2020)

This Stegman wrap cover was selling for cover price all day Wednesday… until it turned a corner and now sells for $20.

NEW RELEASE HEAT: VENOM #26 (MARVEL, 2020)

Collectors have another book to chase with this first appearance of VIRUS. The standard cover is selling for $11. The “On Sale Wednesday” cover is selling for $8. The 1:50 Bagley variant is selling for $70+. There are also LOTS of great store exclusives that all seem to be doing well. The Unknown comics Kirkman virgin cover seems to be doing best at $150.

RUMORED/OPTIONED COMICS

RUMORED/OPTIONED:  ATOM SMASHER

Variety reported this week that “Noah Centineo Joins Dwayne Johnson in ‘Black Adam’ for New Line/DC”. The article notes that Centineo will be playing ATOM SMASHER (alter ego, Albert Rothstein). Albert’s first comic interaction had the moniker NUKLON, whose first appearance is in All-Star Squadron #25 (DC, 1983). He takes on the name “Atom Smasher” in JSA Secret Files and Origins #1 (DC, 1999)

RUMORED/OPTIONED:  GOTHAM CENTRAL

It was announced this week that HBO Max is developing a GOTHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT show. While not called directly, many are speculating that the show will be called GOTHAM CENTRAL. This has given this first issue a nice jump in price to $38 raw.

(Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

RUMORED/OPTIONED:  SAMURAI RABBIT

Netflix announced an animated show called SAMURAI RABBIT by USAGI YOJIMBO creator Stan Sakai. This show will take place in the world of Usagi, but will not feature him. Instead, this will feature a teenage Rabbit called Samurai Yuichi. While Usagi is not the focus, many feel that we will see him at some point. Regardless, ALBEDO #2 is already a CRAZY valuable book (a 9.8 sold for $31K). Collectors are instead focusing on USAGI YOJIMBO #1, which hit a new high of $399.99 for a CGC 9.8 this week,

BOOKS THE WATCHER WATCHES

WATCHING: STRANGE ACADEMY #1 (MARVEL, 2020)

When STRANGE ACADEMY came out, it was a no brainer buy. It’s packed with first appearances, such as: EMILY BRIGHT, DOYLE DORMAMMU, SHAYLEE MOONPEDDLE, ZOE LAVEAU, CALVIN MORSE and DESSY. With all the crazy market heat around Spider-Verse characters, collectors and speculators have their eyes on Strang Academy as the NEXT book to speculate on. Granted, this will take a while to get traction for these characters. However, when you look at books like YOUNG AVENGERS and AGENTS OF ATLAS, bulk first appearance books like this are a smart LONG TERM buy. Though, it’s even a nice short term buy since the main cover is selling for $20/$25. The highlight of this first issue is the STRANGE ACADEMY #1 JEROME OPENA 1:50 VARIANT, which had a high sale of $199.99 raw.

KEY COMIC OF THE WEEK

KEY OF THE WEEK: ETERNALS #1 (MARVEL, 1976)

We’re getting closer and closer to FINALLY seeing an ETERNALS trailer, and collectors are getting ready. August 2019 had the highest sale of $2,050 for a 9.8. Then, month by month this just kept dropping $100, finally getting down to $670 for a 9.8. With so much prominence on these characters, who will be ushering in MCU’s phase 4, this was a surprise to see. It’s clear that this is going to be a key book for the future of the MCU. Sales have slowly been climbing back up with the most recent sale at $1,395. Congrats to the smart buyer who got a 9.8 for $670, that was a great investment.
