Welcome to CovrPrice’s weekly Newsletter!
This week we saw a lot of Star Wars movement thanks to the insanely awesome Mandalorian series on Disney+. Whether you’re a SW fan or not, the market is hyper-focused on it right now. Beyond galaxies far, far away… this week we also saw a new high sale for Cowboy Ninja Viking (Chris Pratt’s film that might still be in development), a big sale for the 1st appearance of Lady Death, and we call out a great high sale for another error comic. Enjoy!

COMIC BOOK SHAKERS
Every day CovrPrice’s Daily Shaker List calls out comics with the highest sales value sold that day. Throughout the week we pull the more interesting ones and elaborate on them here. Check out our sweet Shaker List here.
SHAKER: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #30 (471) (MARVEL, 2001)
This first appearance of Morlun and the villain Ezekiel is hitting some big strides, like this week’s CGC 9.9 sale of $660. Ezekiel could be a big Spider-Man villain down the road, so this 9.9 purchase could end up being a fantastic investment.
SHAKER: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #316 – NEWSSTAND (MARVEL, 1989)
We mentioned how hot this first Venom cover was a few weeks ago. This week, with the market’s love of newsstands, it had a new high of $1,500 for a CGC 9.8.
SHAKER: COWBOY NINJA VIKING #1 (IMAGE, 2009)
It’s been a while since we’ve seen any updated news on the development of this Chris Pratt starring film. In 2018, it was reported as “indefinitely delayed”. However, there have been conflicting mentions of it still being in active development. Regardless, it hit a BIG new high of $599.99 for a CGC 9.8 this week.
SHAKER: DARTH VADER #3 – ADI GRANOV – 2ND PRINT – RED (MARVEL, 2015)
With Ashoka finally appearing, fans are now moving on to the characters that have also been rumored to either appear in the MANDALORIAN or have their own series. Doctor Aphra is one of these characters. Her first appearance is moving quickly, with the standard cover selling a NM+ raw copy for $196.50. We mentioned the purple 4th print a few weeks ago and how hot that was. Now you can add this red 2nd print into the mix. It hit $295 for a CGC 9.8… which is roughly what the first print is selling for.
SHAKER: EVIL ERNIE #1 (MALIBU, 1991)
If you haven’t bought a LADY DEATH comic at a west coast convention, then you have a will of steel. They’re fantastic covers and affordable prices can easily turn the most casual collector into a Lady Death fan. Heck, Chaos comics has remained alive for the past 29 years due to her popularity. Her first appearance in EVIL ERNIE #1 is highly desired and keeps going up. This week, a CGC 9.6 sold for $1,099.95, topping the previous sale of $570 for a 9.6 in June.
SHAKER: FANTASTIC FOUR #110 – GREEN ERROR (MARVEL, 1971)
We love error books. For years, this “Green” error was relatively cheap. It was a simple mistake where the wrong colors mixed together, giving most of the characters a green tint on the cover. However, prices go up as copies dry up into collections. That’s exactly what happened this week when a CGC 8.0 sold for $930.99. Raw copies have previously sold for less than $150… but with this new market, that’s changing. (click the link to see how it looks compared to the regular version)
SHAKER: GIANT-SIZE CHILLERS FEATURING CURSE OF DRACULA #1 (MARVEL, 1974)
This first appearance of Lilith (of Ghost Rider’s Midnight Sons) just more than doubled her market value with this week’s CGC 9.6 of $799.99 (the last sale was in May for $326). It’s still not clear what’s happening with Ghost Rider or The Midnight Sons on Disney +, but that doesn’t seem to be slowing her down.
SHAKER: THE INCREDIBLE HULK #4 – VENOM VARIANT – DEL MUNDO (MARVEL, 2011)
We’ve mentioned the magical year of 2011 for variants. This low-print year produced one of the most expensive crops of incentive variants the market has ever seen. The Venom theme that year was particularly fruitful. In 2015, this variant was highly sought after by collectors. Over the past years, as more copies came to market, the value went down a bit. However, as copies have once again dried up, a raw sale sold for a big $549.95.
SHAKER: MARVEL SUPER-HEROES SECRET WARS #8 – NEWSSTAND (MARVEL, 1984)
This classic cover hit another new high of $949.95 for a rare CGC 9.8, making it the highest price yet.
SHAKER: MARVEL TEAM-UP #141 – NEWSSTAND (MARVEL, 1984)
Another newsstand makes the list, this time for the (tied w/ the more popular Amazing Spider-Man #252) first appearance of Spider-Man’s black suit/symbiote. While Secret Wars #8 is an origin story that came out months after this, it is surprising to see it sell for less. Regardless, $725 for a CGC 9.8 was the big new sale for it this week.
SHAKER: MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR #1 – VON EEDEN 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015)
This Disney channel animated series is in its final production stages. Collectors are getting ready by moving on this hard to find variant. It sold for $200 raw this week and $800 for a CGC 9.8!
SHAKER: STAR WARS: DOCTOR APHRA #6 – JEN BARTEL 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEl, 2020)
We LOVE Bartel’s work. Her amazing cover for this issue of Doctor Aphra was a surprise mega-hit this week, hitting a current market price of $175!
SHAKER: THANOS #13 – 1:25 RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE VARIANT (MARVEL, 2017)
This first appearance of Cosmic Ghost Rider may have slipped our attention, but it’s been heating up recently with a new high 9.8 sale of $1,425.
This internal art of Supergirl was used for the highly coveted Batman/Superman #4 German Variant. Then, at SDCC 2017, they used it on this virgin cover. Being a little more accessible, it’s been increasing in price for a while. Raws have been selling for $200 and a CGC 9.8 sold this week for $449.99.
SHAKER: SILK #1 – SKOTTIE YOUNG – MARVEL BABIES (MARVEL, 2015)
So, this week’s sale of $355 for CGC 9.8 was rather surprising. Earlier that day, a 9.8 sold for $115… which is more in line with where it was going. That big sale may be an outlier. However, keep an eye on this. Skottie Young fans are quite loyal, so this could be perfectly legit.
SHAKER: SPIDER-GWEN #24 – J. SCOTT CAMPBELL – COVER C – GWENOM (LIMITED 1,500) (MARVEL, 2017)
Gwenom has been gaining popularity over the last few years. While the standard cover does show her transformation, it’s VERY hit or miss for collectors. You’re either in the LOVE IT or HATE IT camp. With that said, collectors love J. Scott Campbell and his GWENOM variant shows her in her full venomous transformation, giving this the edge with this week’s CGC 9.8 sale of $450.
SHAKER: STAR WARS #42 – NEWSSTAND (MARVEL, 1980)
Wow, first BOBA FETT sold this newsstand for a crazy new high of $2,795 for a CGC 9.8. The last 9.8 sold in July for $949.99. “This is the way.”
SHAKER: STAR WARS: DARTH MAUL #2 – INCENTIVE DAVID AJA VARIANT (MARVEL, 2017)
This first appearance of CAD BANE has been a pricey book for a few months now. However, it just got pricier with this week’s 9.8 sale of $705 for a CGC 9.8. Man, Star Wars books…. geez…
SHAKER: STAR WARS: HEIR TO THE EMPIRE #1 – HASBRO (DARK HORSE, 1995)
For those of you who haven’t seen the most recent episode of THE MANDALORIAN, then we won’t spill it here. However, this book is going nuts for ALL covers. This Hasbro cover shows what a “Toy Variant” can do with raw sales of $150 plus and a CGC 9.8 sale of $1,400!
SHAKER: STAR WARS: JEDI VS. SITH #1 – DYNAMIC FORCES VARIANT (DARK HORSE, 2001)
This DF variant of the first appearance of DARTH BANE (not to be confused with CAD BANE… I know… fricking Star Wars) sold for a MASSIVE $2,500 for a 9.8. Seriously… congrats to you Star Wars fans who believed in these books for YEARS as we all passed them over.
SHAKER: ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #1 – NEWSSTAND (MARVEL, 2011)
MORE newsstand love, this one sold for $2,899.99. AND it’s still going up!
SHAKER: ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 – NEWSSTAND (MARVEL, 2011)
Nope, not quite done with Newsstands. This first appearance of Miles Morales sold for $2,050 raw.
SHAKER: USAGI YOJIMBO #1 (FANTAGRAPHICS, 1987)
We thought the $450 9.8 sale was impressive earlier this month. However, it already was passed over by this week’s new high 9.8 sale of $900. People love bunnies with swords.
SHAKER: YOUNG ALLIES #6 – ART ADAMS (1:15) (MARVEL, 2010)
Art Adams has a distinct style, especially for how he draws women. We honestly love this cover. We also have a nostalgic soft spot for Firestar. Apparently, we’re not the only ones as a 9.8 CGC copy sold this week for $700.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: TOXIC AVENGER
Remember this classic 80 series of comics and films? Well, he’s back! Deadline is reporting that “Peter Dinklage To Star In Legendary’s ‘Toxic Avenger’ Reboot”. Keep an eye on his first appearance (link above) and 1st cover appearance in Marvel Age #98.
WHAT THE WATCHER IS WATCHING
WATCHING: CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS #1 – LENIL YU VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015)
This issue features the first appearance of WHITE FOX. However, this is the only variant that featured her on the cover. While she’s not prevalent in the Marvel universe, her first has been steadily increasing for years. This week, it hit a new high of $289.99 for a CGC 9.8 with raws around $40.
EDIT: As noted by several of our members, she’s also on the Ron Lim Connecting Cover (totally missed her at the bottom there) AND (while it’s not a variant) she’s also there in the background of the main cover. So apparently she was all over the place and we can’t properly use our eyes. Thanks folks!
KEY COMIC OF THE WEEK
KEY OF THE WEEK: WALT DISNEY’S COMICS AND STORIES #1 (DELL, 1940)
This first issue on ongoing Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse stories is MUST have for Disney collectors. Problem is, this is one expensive book. This week a CGC 2.0 sold for $3K!
