WEEK IN REVIEW

January 6th, 2022

Welcome to our 2021 Wrap-up!

As you know, CovrPrice is all about tracking actual (AKA: real) sales for graded and raw comics. We work hard to accurately gather sales across multiple major marketplaces to give you the best fair market value estimates (i.e., FMVs) for your comics, updated daily.

In 2021 alone, we tracked the value of just over 3 million comics, collectively representing over $130.2 million dollars worth of comics sold across aftermarkets! That’s almost DOUBLE our numbers in 2020, which was $75 million!!! As you can imagine, tracking this many sales (in just one year) allows us to provide our members with this rare end-of-year perspective. While some of these trends were obvious, there are plenty of surprises here.

Below you’ll see two categories, each broken into the following three lists:

Comics That Sold The Most Units in 2021:

  • All (graded & raw)
  • Variants
  • Subsequent Printings
  • Newsstands

Comics That Had the Highest Sales Volume in 2021:

  • All (graded & raw)
  • Variants
  • Subsequent Printings
  • Newsstands

We hope you enjoy the lists below and get a good (hard-data /non-curated/agenda-free) view of where the comic book aftermarket went last year in 2021!

*NOTE: Please note that although we do a pretty darn good job of gathering sales data (that’s what we do), we do not capture 100% of all sales that have taken place across the comic book aftermarket. That said, you can safely assume that actual sales and values are likely even HIGHER than what we’re reporting below.

2021 COMICS THAT SOLD THE MOST UNITS

Our first set of lists highlights which comics sold the most units in 2021. In other words, we counted all the sales we collected for each comic and rank-ordered them below. Also, just for fun, we’re showing what their total sales added up to.

COMICS THAT SOLD THE MOST UNITS //ALL (GRADED & RAW COMBINED)

Our first set of lists highlights the standard covers (direct editions, non-variants, non-subsequent printings) that broadly sold the most copies throughout the year. This takes into account both graded and raw sales.

SUMMARY:

If you recall, SPAWN #1 was 2019’s TOP BOOK. It then fell to #3 in 2020, letting Miles and Punchline take the top two spots. But this year, he’s back on Top (Fun Fact: Spawn #1 is the top book across our user’s collections, with a whopping 2,724 copies)! While Miles’ first appearance slipped from #1 to #7 this year, it crushed all the other books on the list in terms of price (more on that later, see the HIGHEST SALES VOLUME // ALL (GRADED & RAW section below). Aside from Spawn, this list was dominated by Marvel. Content (specifically Marvel-based content) is clearly one of the biggest aftermarket movers. Marvel dominates the comic book content space. It’s also clear how “Amazing” investing in Spider-Man-based books was for 2021. We have “Venom: Lethal Protector #1”, “Spider-Man Unlimited #1,” and “ASM #361” driven by VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE. And then you have that teaser for SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE that lit a massive fire under Spider-Man 2099 books (despite him appearing at the end of the first film). What’s crazy about 2099 is his late addition in 2021. These sales were mainly from November to December! Moon Knight’s on the list to remind folks that he has big plans for 2022. And then there’s X-Men #4, the first appearance of Omega Red in the #3 position. He was rumored to appear in FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, WANDAVISION, and BLACK WIDOW! That was a lot of wishful thinking that didn’t pan out. Yet, those rumors were so consistent that he made the list for the second year in a row.

COMICS THAT SOLD THE MOST UNITS // VARIANT COMICS

SUMMARY:

This list is a little more balanced. It showcases the hottest books of the year as well. It’s hard to remember the beginning of 2021, but STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC dominated the aftermarket for months. This book has some long-term potential with multiple first appearances (Keeve Trennis, Avar Kriss, and Sskeer). Stray Dogs by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner was just one of those books that took on a life of its own. While only the B “Silence of the Lambs” homage cover made this list, Stray Dogs is ALL over the place in the Top 50. The first appearance of Vengeance (Bane’s daughter) was super hot this year, which helped the Lee Bermejo B cover sneak onto the list. We didn’t expect that one. Bosslogic’s Black Adam cover gained significant traction after releasing right around the time The Rock shared his first look in the Black Adam costume, setting this incredible cover on fire. James Tynion and Jenny Frison made the list with their hot books/covers for Boom’s “Something is Killing the Children” and Image’s “Department of Truth.” The “old-timer” of the list, Spider-Man #1, is a modern classic by the Toddfather. It was on the list last year, so no surprise to see it back on. This is a highly nostalgia-driven cover for collectors of the ’90s. The Iron Man Rahzzah was fun to see. Yet, the biggest surprise was the Venom #32 Venom/Alien variant. Sometimes trends even sneak by us. Despite never hitting the CovrPrice Top 10, the Shakers list, the Hot list, or even the movers lists, this was a book many collectors bought up throughout the year. Unarguably, it is a cool cover.

COMICS THAT SOLD THE MOST UNITS // SUBSEQUENT PRINTINGS

In 2020, collectors went crazy for subsequent printings, and the market suddenly decided to favor lower print runs over first printings. This trend continued into 2021 and showed no signs of stopping. Here are the subsequent printings that sold the most copies last year:

SUMMARY:

BOOM! and James Tynion IV took over this list. SIKTC started the year with content rumors, which were confirmed in July. It was already selling quite well, but this was a massive boost for the title. The foil Local Comic Shop Day 7th print took the top spot and proved that collectors like shiny things. BOOM! Also found success with the Keanu Reeves title BRZRKR. Continuing to support the fact that collectors like shiny things, the 2nd & 3rd print foils for BRZRKR were incredibly hot last year. And how awesome was it to see Keanu talking about a comic book on talk shows!? Throughout this year-end review, stray Dogs, Miles Morales, and the High Republic continue to weave their common thread. One notable entry here was Bad Idea’s “Not a first print” version of “Eniac #1”. Bad Idea came into 2021 like a rocket with “Hero Trade” and “Eniac,” only to end the year with the company coming to its end (at least as we know it). Another surprise was Nic Klein’s 2nd Print for Thor #6, which is still supposed to connect to Marvel’s current TIMELESS series (this book may not be entirely done yet).

COMICS THAT SOLD THE MOST UNITS // NEWSSTAND

Like Subsequent printings, this was also a new category for 2020, and it’s back again for 2021. Here are the top Newsstands that sold the most copies in 2021:

SUMMARY:

Marvel, Marvel, and more Marvel. Spider-Man, Spider-Man, and more Spider-Man. Moon Knight’s on here with TWO issues: (1) The first issue for his first ongoing series. (2) Issue #3 features the first appearance of MIDNIGHT MAN, who’s still rumored to appear in the upcoming 6-episode Disney+ series. Fans are still crossing their fingers to see Firestar, Iceman, and Spidey team up one day (though it seems so far away). The first Spider-Man black costume (symbiote) has two entries, along with Venom and Carnage’s first full appearances. And a moment of silence for possibly one of the biggest disappointments in 2021, Taskmaster. His first appearance was scorching hot throughout 2021… until we all saw BLACK WIDOW. *sigh* Well, the movie was still fun. We did get Yelena out of it (who may be our favorite MCU addition last year).

2021 COMICS THAT HAD THE HIGHEST SALES VOLUME

Now let’s look at the comics that had the largest sales volume. For these lists, we’ve taken all the aftermarket values that CovrPrice captured in 2021 for each comic and summed them up into one overall total. This gives you a general estimate of how much money was spent on each comic last year. We also include the “total units sold” to get a sense of market movement.

HIGHEST SALES VOLUME // ALL (GRADED & RAW)

SUMMARY:

You know these. They’re all pretty straightforward. But, wow, what a year for Spidey. It’s been mentioned that he’s become the heart of the MCU after Tony Stark’s death in ENDGAME. However, we longtime Spidey fans have always seen him as the heart of the Marvel comic universe. So, this was just a natural progression for the relatable character. And how about Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in the MCU (proper) now! That helped Daredevil #1 gain a ton of traction last year. Among these heavy hitters, please note that ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 is hanging out with the biggest comic book grails. Let that sink in for a second. It moved from a $1 bin book in 2012 to now, where it’s nestled between the Punisher and the Man without Fear (seems sweaty). Sure, it had more volume than Action Comics’ two sales. But still, to see Miles’ first appearance on this list is awe-inspiring.

HIGHEST SALES VOLUME // VARIANT COMICS

Here’s where things get a little interesting. Rare and expensive variants simply don’t have the numbers to rank in the “most sold variant” list. However, this highest sales list helps showcase the variants that collectors are investing in. However, these variants also have to be “easier” to find than high-priced ones that may only sell a few copies a month or even a year.

#10: YOUNG AVENGERS #1 – WIZARD WORLD 2005 – SKETCH | MARVEL | 2005

SUMMARY:

Ahsoka, Riri, The Young Avengers (and all their first appearances). These are the rising stars of the Marvel comic verse, the MCU, and just simply books that seem to have staying power. These are books rising in value and are hands down some of the best books for a modern collector to have in their collection. Also on the list is the new trend to offer signed high-ratio incentives. As seen by BRZRKR #1’s 1:1000 signed by Keanu Reeves and King Spawn #1’s 1:250 signed by Todd McFarlane, these both came with a note from CGC allowing buyers to send these in for a signature series slab within a specific amount of time. These were very expensive buy-ins, hence the high aftermarket costs. But dang, they’re cool. And a big round of applause to SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #1 Jenny Frison Unlocked variant, which was the ONLY variant to make BOTH variant lists (Top Selling and Sales Volume)!

HIGHEST SALES VOLUME // SUBSEQUENT PRINTINGS

SUMMARY:

This was a fascinating list. TMNT had a colossal year (again), with the 2nd and 3rd prints of the original #1 hitting new highs. Knull’s most popular cover for his first full appearance is still sought after. After dropping in value in 2021, fans took the opportunity to buy into his first appearance for long-term potential. Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan makes her only appearance on the list (though, we have a feeling she’ll take next year’s list over). Miles continues his reign. SIKTC’s multiple printings for the 1st issue take two spots (though we still like the 2nd print the best). And Doctor Aphra sneaks in with her purple 4th print in the last second. Perfect timing, too, as her first appearance is picking up RIGHT NOW thanks to some possible hints of her existence in BOOK OF BOBA FETT episode 2.

SUMMARY:

It’s not surprising that this list is very similar to the first Newsstand list by units sold. Once again, Spawn is in a sea of Marvel’s heavy hitters. Deadpool sneaks onto the list with his only entry. Boba Fett, who had a massive year in 2020, just barely makes it as well. Boba seems to be steady right now. But that X-Men #129 is a new contender. With the first appearance of Emma Frost and Kitty Pride, this is just a flare in the comic sky that 2022 is going to be the year of the Mutant movement in the aftermarket. First, let’s see if those Charles Xavier rumors are true for DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS.

2021 YEAR-END WRAP-UP

Well, there you have it. 2021 was a year that, well, felt like the same year before it. We don’t even know what to call it. With that said, we were thrilled to hit conventions this year for the first time since 2019. So that felt pretty amazing. What’s even more impressive is how the comic book aftermarket not only proved to be pandemic proof but had its best year ever in aftermarket sales. There were SO many hot books. Many of you are probably asking yourself why many books didn’t make the list. We wish we could make these lists 50 books each, but we do like to sleep when we can. Again, let’s mention how the market almost DOUBLED in price! Truly amazing. With productions up and running, here’s to an upcoming year packed with comic book content across Marvel, DC, Image, Scout, Dark Horse, Boom! (and more). Marvel was able to steer its content ship in 2021. Hence its heavy presence on this year-end list. However, we can’t wait to see what 2022 brings!

With ALL of that above, we graciously thank you for trusting us, our content, and our site, COVRPRICE.COM. We do our very best to bring you accurate value estimates for all your comics (based only on actual sales data). As we continue to grow, expect to see more good stuff coming your way (and we have some AWESOME updates hitting soon)! In 2021, we had plenty of fun content and tons of giveaways, thanks to our various partners: COMICBOOK.COM, LORDS OF THE LONGBOX, VERY GARY, COMIC BOOK WOMEN, TALES FROM THE FLIPSIDE, KRS COMICS, SOURCE POINT PRESS, SKYBOUND, IMAGE COMICS, BOOM! STUDIOS, COMICSHEATINGUP.NET, MYSLABS.COM, SHORTBOXED, and SCOUT COMICS. Not to mention the great relationships we forged over the years with all the industry’s various creators and additional publishers. PLUS, more to come as we continue to develop some REALLY exciting partnerships for 2022! Just this past fall alone, we gave away $5,000 worth of giveaways!! And there’s plenty more to come!

We also started our YouTube channel AND a TikTok channel, both which houses our quick TOP 10 rundown, produced by DEFINITIVE FILM. Be sure to hit those share buttons, join/like our YouTube channel, and spread the COVRPRICE love to your friends, family, doctors, and local grocery clerks. If you’re not signed up yet, then what are you doing!? It’s awesome.

If you’re interested in partnering with CovrPrice in 2022 (writers, missing item experts, a “you’re doing it wrong and I want to help” person, publishers, creators, retailers, fans, cosplayers, etc.), don’t be afraid to reach out and say hi. We’re always looking for good people to work with. Reach out to us at [email protected] to let us know if there’s anything else you’d like us to cover. It could even be about what we got wrong! However, we like compliments, dad jokes, and TikTok videos (specifically cats… it’s seriously addicting).

See you soon! Here’s hoping 2022 is even better!
