When Reggie, in his Captain Amazing outfit, is videotaped knocking a friend from the path of an oncoming car, their superhero club becomes nationally famous. Amelia, who is trying to figure out who she is, is delighted, but she's also enthusiastic about the cheerleading squad. Fanatical squad captain Britney insists on complete dedication, but Amelia can't comply. From the heights of the club and the squad she's fallen into the depths, seeing friend/enemy/possible romance Kyle still on crutches from a long-ago accident incurred on an outing they'd had together.; Amelia reconciles with Kyle, who joins their other friends in helping her and Rhonda make their getaway on a 15-hour bus trip. While they're gone, Reggie leads many of the other kids on a massive assault against the cheerleading competition, which he calls the first step in an adult conspiracy to snuff out their childhoods. Amelia finds the despairing Tanner, angrily demands that she pull herself together, and shows a video of many kids praising Tanner's music and begging for her return. Tanner takes the girls home. Despite loads of punishment, they serenely agree that it was worth it.; When an ex-boy friend unleashes a vicious "tell-all" about Amelia's aunt Tanner, she vanishes from her concert tour. With Amelia preoccupied, Britney melts down in hysteria over the cheering competition. Amelia quarrels with her mom, who insists that Tanner always runs when things get tough, and refuses to search for her -- she is, of course, a grown woman. Amelia suddenly has an insight as to where Tanner has gone, and tells Rhonda that she's going after her aunt. Rhonda insists that she can't go alone.; Amelia started out the book confused as to who she was. Now she's examined her life, her friends, and her family, and happily concludes that she is, in fact, Amelia McBride. And she's just getting started.
