Faced with the obliteratron robot, Hilo remembers his own story. He is a robot, created to battle evil robots. But for all his efforts, he failed on his own world. Razorwark destroyed all life, and the frightened Hilo fled through a dimensional portal to earth. Now Razorwark has sent his minions to destroy life on this planet. Hilo removes D. J. and Gina to safety, then attacks despite his fears. Destroying the robots, he returns to his own world, once again to face Razorwark.; In the impact crater is a young boy with no memory. He absorbs D. J.'s language by touch, goes home with him, and eventually remembers that his name is Hilo. D. J. gives him food and clothing, both of which seem new to him. Hilo dreams of hopelessly fighting a monster called Razorwark, and being very afraid. He hacks school records to get enrolled in D. J.'s classes, where they discover that after three years, Gina has returned to school.; Hilo reassembles himself, and remembers that in his old home he had been battling Razorwark, who wanted to hurt Hilo's friends. They return to D. J.'s home for a frantic meal with D. J.'s high-achieving family. D. J. sadly tells Gina that just as he doesn't fit in with his family, or with Hilo, he doesn't fit in with her. She and all the others are outstanding in various ways, while he is only boring and ordinary.; Hilo figures out that the unusual meteor shower earth is experiencing is actually bringing pieces of giant robots, which are then being assembled in order to attack. With help from Gina and D. J., Hilo defeats several of the robots. But then they discover that the robots are assembling another robot, even more gigantic.; Sensing trouble, Hilo rushes to the site of another impact, where he is confronted by a giant robot. Memory returns as he flies and uses lasers to protect his friends. But the RANT keeps reassembling itself, repeatedly hammering Hilo until D. J. pushes it off a cliff to its destruction. Rushing to Hilo's side, D. J. and Gina discover that Hilo too is a robot, and that he's been dismantled in the combat.; Hilo's naïvete, combined with his encyclopedic fictitious backstory, bewilders everyone at school. The boys visit Gina at her new home, where they find her frustrated because her family discourages her special interests, such as astronomy. Hilo assembles her telescope -- usually a two-hour job -- in minutes.; Flash-forward to the day Hilo and D. J. meet, when they are chased by a giant robot.; D. J.'s brothers and sisters are all exceptional at something, or even several things. The only thing D. J. was really good at was being friends with Gina. But when he and she were seven years old, Gina's family moved away. D. J. was still lonely three years later, when something strange crashed to earth nearby.
