Welcome to CovrPrice’s comic Week In Review! This week we see Spawn’s Fan Expo Variant explode, Once & Future hits the ground running, and Canadian Price variants get some love!
SHAKER: RICK & MORTY #1 (ONI, 2015) With a new series only a couple of months away (plus a steady stream of future seasons), Rick & Morty issues are heating back up. Today, while only by $50, marks a new height of $1,100 for a CGC 9.8. We’re Rick & Morty fans, and this value is pretty shocking to us. This price was always reserved for the hard to find 1:50 variant. Yet, R&M fans tend to happily spend money on their collectibles (as seen with the insane McDonalds Schezwan sauce promotion). (Find on eBay)
TUMBLER/ SHAKER: CANTO #1 1:10 RETAILER VARIANT (IDW, 2019) Yep, you read that right. This is a rare Tumbler AND Shaker. Sales for this variant have greatly slowed and the market value for this variant has fallen…hard. With a high sale of $99.99, this is now selling for $10 to $15. However, today, a CGC 9.8 sold for $299.99. Granted, only three 9.8’s have sold since it was released… and this first issue had widespread damage… so maybe this high 9.8 value makes sense for now. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: MOON KNIGHT #1 BILL SIENKIEWICZ 1:75 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2014) Rumors of a MOON KNIGHT announcement at this weekend’s D23 is already pushing this variant to new levels. To see a 9.4 for this variant hit $725 is a hint of things to come for this book if Moon Knight does hit the MCU. Buckle in. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: VAMPIRELLA 2006 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL #1 ARTHUR SUYDAM VIRGIN VARIANT (HARRIS, 2006) Rare Vampirella variants have a ton of heat of them. These older limited virgin variants are especially getting some traction. This particular cover was limited to 500 copies. It’s amazing how 500 copies can mostly disappear over 14 years. This is something to remember when looking at today’s low print variants. These dry up into collections and rarely come back to market. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER/ MOVER/ HOT: ONCE & FUTURE #1 (BOOM, 2019) ONCE & FUTURE #1 was easily the hot book of the week. In fact, it holds two spots on our Top 10. There are 7 key covers selling (for now):
- The first printing is selling for $15.
- The Ganucheau Comichub Variant is at $29.99
- The B&W CBLDF variant is selling at $34.99
- The one per Store “Thank You” is selling at $50 (though it did hit $100). This variant outsold the standard first print with 110 sales. It’s unclear how many of these there are. However, there are over 2,600 Diamond accounts, though they had to be a Boom registered dealer to qualify for one of these. So, it’s a guess at how many there are (we think they are definitely more than the rest of these variants).
- The store-exclusive LaFuente variant is limited to 1,000 issues and is selling for $50.
- There’s a Glow In the Dark LaFuente virgin variant, limited to 500 issues, that’s selling for $80 to $100.
- The SDCC Diamond Retailer Advance Edition is selling for the most at $199.99 and, based on the limited number invited to the Diamond lunch, is most likely limited to 750ish (by the way, we gave one of these away in our CovrPrice GiveAway last week).
Of course, as announced, there’s an already hot 2nd print (which is going to be SUPER hard to find and will have a VERY small print run), a 3rd print, a 4th print and we’re sure a 5th print is not too far behind. This is AMAZING for a book that’s been out for 1 week. Another BOOM title that has also sold out before release is their upcoming title SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN. The 2nd print was reportedly rushed to the printer, and like ONCE & FUTURE’s 2nd print will be exceptionally hard to find. Keep an eye out for those. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: VENGEANCE #1 1:15 DEODATO VARIANT (MARVEL, 2011) Again, amongst all the MCU announcement rumors, some feel that America Chavez is due to appear. Her first appearance is in this hard to find VENGEANCE #1. The 1:15 variant hit a big new height with today’s sale of $755.77 for a CGC 9.8. A CGC 9.8 also sold for $751.60 on the 18th. It’s amazing what books like this do with just a rumor. It’ll be fun to watch books like this if America does show up in the MCU. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: SPAWN #299 FAN EXPO VARIANT (IMAGE, 2019) Today, right out of the gate, this Fan Expo variant hit big with $500 for a raw copy. Granted it’s since settled to $200 raw. Like it’s SDCC sister, this was also limited to 500 copies. So, it looks like Spawn convention variants may be a regular thing now. The big question is if this will cut down the SDCC sales? (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #238 CANADIAN PRICE VARIANT (MARVEL, 1983) Canadian price variants are starting to get more and more attention. Now, when you have a NM copy sell raw for $799.99, that’s only going to draw more eyes. This first appearance of the Hobgoblin is a collector favorite (especially if it has the Tattooz) and this was a new all-time high sale. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: VAMPIRELLA #3 BRUCE TIMM VARIANT (HARRIS, 2001) Here’s a Vampirella variant that you could have picked-up around $30 just a few months ago. However, that time is gone. Today, this Bruce Timm variant sold for $350 raw. Though a CGC 9.8 sold the next day for $157. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: MISTER MIRACLE #4 (DC, 1971) This first appearance of Barda has been creeping up for a while now… leading up to today’s biggest sale ever at $2,250 for a CGC 9.6. The last time a 9.8 sold was back in April 2017 for $454.10. The next 9.8 will probably go for just a little more than that (said with sarcasm). (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: ETERNALS #6 (MARVEL, 1976) Strangely, this issue has no notable first appearance nor any connection to the MCU (other than the Eternals themselves). However, a CGC 9.8 sold today for an all-time height of $1,175. There are only 12 on CGC’s census. For a book that sells raw for $20, that’s a significant premium for a 9.8. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: SPIDER-GWEN #1 (VOL. 1) FOUR COLOR GRAILS VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015) We covered this variant back in May when it sold for $110. However, today’s raw sale for $150.31 is an update we had to mention. We missed the highest sale ever back in June 2019, which sold raw for $199.99. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #18 MARK TORRES “NIRVANA” VARIANT (IDW, 2013) Here’s another variant we covered a month ago. That was back when a copy hit $72. Two copies sold today, one for $175 raw and $99.99 (both were NM). Collector’s really have gravitated to this homage. (Find on eBay)
