WEEK IN REVIEW

October 7th, 2019

Welcome to CovrPrice’s comic Week In Review! During the week of major comic conventions, regular sales slow significantly. The market focuses on the hot convention books and collectors wait to sell key appearances for the hope of content announcements during the convention. With New York Comic-Con last week, this was very much the case. We saw some big books sell for significantly low prices. This week we call out some shakers but focus on providing you with an awesome list of NYCC 2019 variants and their current market values. Enjoy!

SHAKER: ADAM: LEGEND OF THE BLUE MARVEL #1 (MARVEL, 2008) We’ve mentioned this book before, but it still baffles us how this sells for $150 raw. With no active role in a current comic storyline and very loose rumors (AKA: “hopes”) of future MCU inclusion, there aren’t many other books that we can compare this book to. We wonder if Marvel pays attention to trends like this… they should. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: CHAMBER OF CHILLS #19 (HARVEY, 1953)  This is one of, if not THE, top pre-code horror books around. We mention it every time, simply because it tends to go up in price every time. This CBCS 2.5 sold for $3,500, which is WAY over older sales in higher grades. For example, a CGC 5.5 sold for $2,629 in March 2017. It’s fun to see what these do in graded sales. We’ll keep watching for them.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Thursday, 10/3/19

SHAKER: BATMAN #608 – 2ND PRINT (DC, 2002)  While today’s $330 sale for a CGC 9.8 isn’t the highest sale this 2nd print has ever had (that goes to a $450 sale back in July 2019), it was a nice reminder to check in on this book and highlight this classic cover. This cover mirrors Jim Lee’s Superman #604 (which look amazing side by side). We all know this book sold well, but we were surprised at HOW well this sells. For what was once a $100 raw is now going for $200. 9.8’s have nearly doubled in the past 2 years.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: WOLVERINE #1 – CAMPBELL VARIANT (MARVEL, 2010)  We don’t often see this Wolverine as Deadpool Campbell variant. When we do, we like to call it out, like today’s CGC 9.8 sale for $3,100. This is down $1,100 from last September 2018’s CGC 9.8 sale of $4,200.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER/ HOT: GIDEON FALLS #1 – JEFF LEMIRE VIRGIN VARIANT (IMAGE, 2018)  It was announced today that James Wan and his Atomic Monster production company will be joining Hivemind’s adaptation of ‘Gideon Falls’ for TV. Hivemind is co-founded by former Valiant owner, Dinesh Shamdasani. This news helped kick-start renewed sales. The virgin variant seems to be gaining the most traction.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: BATMAN: ALMOST GOT ‘IM (WESTERN, 1993)  This storybook was sealed together with a cassette tape to listen to as you read along. If you look this up, sellers will list this as the “real” 1st appearance of Harley Quinn. Of course, this type of debate can get heated among comic groups. It’s technically not a comic book and therefore not really a 1st appearance. However, it can sell like crazy. For example, today we saw the highest SEALED set (with the cassette) for a massive $800. We track this sale for this LOOSE as well, where it can easily fetch $150 on its own. We’re not going to call this the first appearance of Harley, but we definitely won’t ignore it.  (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: DARKWING DUCK #1 – 2ND PRINT (BOOM! STUDIOS, 2010)  If you don’t know DARKWING, then you didn’t get to enjoy Disney’s afternoon cartoon block of shows, including DUCKTALES, TALESPIN, CHIP ‘N DALE RESCUE RANGERS, and DARKWING DUCK. Darkwing played into a lot of Batman’s troupes and characteristics. When BOOM picked up the comic property, it was a no brainer to create homage variants to Batman’s classic covers. There are numerous homage variants that all do VERY well. We could easily spend more of this newsletter going through them all (we’ll highlight them as they pop up). This DARK KNIGHT 2nd print homage had its highest sale ever at $59.99. There’s an SDCC variant that has a less comical homage to the same cover that sells for $100 to $200.   (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

Saturday, 10/5/19

SHAKER: TOMB OF TERROR #15 (HARVEY, 1954)  Like the CGC label says, “Classic Cover”. And that it is. This pre-code is on the most hardcore PC colletor’s “must-have” list. Like seriously, how many covers today have a face exploding on it? Today’s PGX 2.0 sale for $1,285 is right on track with low-mid grade raws.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKERS/ MOVERS/ HOT: NYCC EXCLUSIVES

New York Comic Con was definitely the main focus for this week ending 10/7/19. There were so many exclusives that saw plenty of attention and market heat. Since CovrPrice is all about tracking values (and just being awesome), here’s a list of some the main NYCC sellers in order of their CURRENT market values:

SPAWN #300 – NYCC 2019 GOLD FOIL VARIANT

$400 (Limited to 500) (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

MARVEL CELEBRATES STAN LEE

$400. While this was not an NYCC exclusive, it was given out at a Marvel Stan Lee event during NYCC. This was a limited event to select guests and Marvel employees. Apparently Marvel is cracking down on guests selling their copies, banning guests from being re-invited and threatening to fire any employee selling one. Good times.  (Find on eBay)

SHAKER: ALBEDO #4 (THOUGHTS & IMAGES, 1985)  With all the attention always on Albedo #2 (first Usagi Yojimbo), it’s easy to overlook Usagi’s 2nd appearance in #4. The market is paying close attention though. Today, a CGC 9.8 sold for $643. Though the highest sale ever goes to a sale in August 2019 for $775 for a 9.8. This will typically sell raw on average for $50. We can see this going up as ALBEDO #2 gets higher and higher.  (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)

SHAKER: CAPTAIN AMERICA #323 (MARVEL, 1986)  It only took a few months, but this first appearance of John Walker aka U.S. Agent (Super Patriot) had it’s highest sale ever with a CGC 9.8 selling today for $300. Marvel Anniversary frame collectors will definitely want this issue. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
