COVRPRICE COMIC BOOK SHAKERS
Every day CovrPrice’s Daily Shaker List calls out comics with the highest sales value sold that day. Throughout the week we pull the more interesting ones and elaborate on them here. Check out our sweet Shaker List here.
SHAKER: ANNIHILATION CONQUEST: WRAITH #1 (MARVEL,2007)
Donny Cates recently tweeted about Wraith having a direct connection to Knull (see below)… which was enough to light a big fire under this book. This issue is the 1st full appearance of Wraith and raw sales jumped from $15 to the current $81! 9.8’s are selling for $250. Look for more details of this connection in the upcoming WEB OF VENOM: WRAITH by Mr. Cates.
SHAKER: CAPTAIN MARVEL #17 CAMPION 1:20 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2012)
This issue marks the 2nd cameo appearance of Kamala Kahn. While the 2nd print is a big $ book with her first cover appearance, this THOR variant by Pascal Campion has always moved between $50 to $150 raw over the past several years. However, this week we saw a BIG sale at $495 for a CGC 9.8, which is a significant jump from the previous sales of $200.
SHAKER: COBRA KAI: KARATE KID SAGA CONTINUES #3 1:10 VEREGGE NES HOMAGE (IDW, 2019)
While this has dropped from its height of $86.75, the current going price of $60 is pretty big for a 1:10 variant. This series has a low print run (reportedly under 4K), so these 1:10 variants are hard to come by. The main draw of this is the NES homage. There are many game variant collectors out there.
SHAKER: SKOTTIE YOUNG BABY VARIANTS
Like Campbell and his Women of Marvel covers, John Tyler Christopher’s Action Figure Variants (and negative space variants like the florescent wolverine cover)… Skottie Young has a big fan base for his “Baby” variants. While most are only worth cover price, there are several that collectors have a hard time finding. This week we saw two of those: HULK #1 SKOTTIE YOUNG SHE-HULK SKOTTIE YOUNG VARIANT (MARVEL, 2016) with a new high raw sale of $56 and TUKI: SAVE THE HUMANS #4 SKOTTIE YOUNG VARIANT (CARTOON BOOKS, 2015) with a raw sale of $50. Many shops/convention retailers keep these baby variants together in one box, so these are great to have on your radar.
SHAKER: GRIMM FAIRY TALES: OZ #1 ARTGERM VARIANT (ZENESCOPE, 2013)
Artgerm is a powerhouse artist that commands premiums for his rarer variants. It’s easy to forget that he was a pretty regular cover artist for multiple publishers in the early 2010s. This OZ one was one of those earlier covers and has slowly been drying up, causing the prices to increase year by year. This week it hit an all-time high at $49.99.
SHAKER: G.I. JOE, A REAL AMERICAN HERO #45 (MARVEL, 1986)
This hit a big $354 for CGC 9.8. This issue contains the 1st appearances of Alpine and Quick Kick. This sale is likely the product of there being no graded copies above 9.4 available for purchase and the small pool of 9.8’s currently graded (16 on the CGC census) out of 44 total graded by CGC. There’s been talk of more G.I. Joe content to come out of the Snake Eyes solo film (which is getting positive chatter). Regardless, it’s pretty interesting to see books that sell for $10 raw get such a premium in high grades. Whether or not you grade, if you have a high grade raw for this “gap” book… grading is a must.
SHAKER: PINEAPPLE MAN #1 (SOLOGRAPHICS, 1994)
The first issue of the self-proclaimed “First Hawaiian Superhero” sold for a big $150 raw. This just came into our awareness as none of us recall ever seeing it in our many digs. However, we’ll sure keep an eye out for it now!. Also worth noting: the ASHCAN PREVIEW sells for $300.
SHAKER: PREDATOR #1 (DARK HORSE, 1989)
This first appearance of Predator in comics is one good looking book. This is another gap book that sells for $20 to $40 raw in high grade and had a sale of $360 for a CGC 9.8 this week.
SHAKER: RICK & MORTY #26 (ONI, 2017)
The first several issues (and it’s multiple variants and printings) all sell well and high. Once you get past issue #6, the market value isn’t there for the issues after. However, this Meeseeks variant has sneakily been climbing and hit $45 raw this week. (“I’m Mr. Meeseeks, look at me!“)
SHAKER: THE NEW GODS #1 (DC, 1970)
DC is still moving along with a NEW GODS film with Ava Duvernay at the helm and Tom King writing the script. This update helped this sell a CGC 9.8 for $1,700 this week.
SHAKER: SILVER SURFER BLACK #4 PEACH MOMOKO 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2019)
Well, this sure escalated quickly. Collectors are SUPER into Knull right now, who appears on this variant. You could have bought this variant for $25 at the beginning of April… which is the same price it averaged at since it was released in August 2019 (except for the $6.99 copies that Mycomicshop blew out in Nov. & Dec.). However, on May 7th a copy sold for $100… which lit it on fire with the most recent copy selling for $188 raw. What a jump!
SHAKER: SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1 NEWSSTAND EDITION (MARVEL, 1992)
We’ll talk more about the content announcement below under the RUMORED/OPTION section, however before the news hit… this newsstand edition sold for a massive $400 for a 9.8. Keep in mind that the direct edition sells for $60 to $80 in a 9.8. Behold the power of a barcode.
SHAKER: STATIC X #45 (DC, 1997)
We’ve mentioned this book several times now, but it just keeps hitting new heights like this week’s $400 sale of a CGC 9.8. When we’re able to dig for comics again… keep this on your radar.
SHAKER: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES X-FILES CONSPIRACY #1 1:25 TABLOID VARIANT (IDW, 2014)
Now, this is one SUPER rare book. ALL of the X-Files Tabloid variants are rare and impossible to find. Yet, one copy sold this week at $125 raw. We’re bummed we missed it. This was a GREAT price.
SHAKER: THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #19 (MARVEL, 2014)
Sooo, Christian Bale has been rumored to play at least 10 (an exaggeration) different rumored MCU characters now. However, the NEW (well, new as in March) rumor is that he’s set to play Dario Agger (aka Minotaur) in THOR: LOVE & THUNDER, whose first appearance is in this issue. All of the variants have seen big jumps, the MANN 1:75 is at $110 raw & 1:100 Bianchi at $112 raw and the “Cat Thor” variant at $60. Crazy times folks.
SHAKER: VAMPIRELLA RED SONJA #3 TINTED RED VIRGIN LIMITED EDITION FRANK CHO (DYNAMITE, 2019)
Not much to say about this one, just surprised to see a $639.34 sale for a raw copy of this very hard to find variant. Dynamite has a long history of producing some VERY high ratio variants for VERY low print books… turning them into some of the hardest to find variants in the industry. That’s exactly what has happened here.
SHAKER: THE WALKING DEAD #35 ERROR (IMAGE, 2007)
We love error books and this is a hard one to find. This error, of which the last page is printed twice, is a pretty simple error. It’s reported that 6% of this book’s print run was affected. Many probably don’t even realize they have one. If you do, flip to the last pages and see if you have this error. If you do, then you’ll be pretty darn happy with this week’s new high sale of $1,200 for a CGC 9.8.
SHAKER/ INDIE SPOTLIGHT: WARCORNS: COMBAT UNICORNS FOR HIRE #1 CHROMIUM VARIANT (SOURCE POINT, 2020)
After a very successful Kickstarter, this book was picked up pretty quickly by Source Point Press. And while this series doesn’t officially come out until this June, writer Garrett Gunn has been bringing this book (and its variants) to various conventions. We read it and LOVED it. The first ebay sale ever for this book hit this week at $75 for this Chromium variant. Mostly, we just wanted to bring this book to your attention.
SHAKER: WITCHBLADE #161 (IMAGE/ TOP COW, )
Before the hugely successful WOLVERINE #1 C2E2 YELLOW VARIANT, John Tyler Christopher’s first negative space cover was this hard to find Witchblade cover. Not sure if his convention variants are pushing this book’s sales up, but it sold for $50 this week and hit a high of $67 in early April.
RUMORED/OPTIONED COMIC BOOKS
There was a TON of content news this week! Buckle in!
RUMORED/OPTIONED: BALL AND CHAIN
Scott Lobdell’s BALL AND CHAIN is confirmed to have a 7 studio bidding war for this project and already has both Emily Blunt and The Rock attached. Word is Netflix is the front runner (while unconfirmed). This one might actually move through development pretty quickly. Upon DEADLINE’s report, this book has been selling for $35. However, a NM full set of issues 1-4 sold for $202!
RUMORED/OPTIONED: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
NBC’s PEACOCK (*snicker… sorry…) streaming service has picked this property back up with Michael Lesslie to write & Exec Produce. Not sure if this will translate to comic sales though (it didn’t when the show was on last time).
RUMORED/OPTIONED: BLACK BADGE #1 (Boom! Studios, 2018)
Yeah, this is from last week but we missed it with our ONE YEAR LATER newsletter. Matt Kindt recently commented via twitter that this book has been optioned with “I think we’re just waiting for an official announcement… ;)”, which was then promptly deleted. Our friends at www.comicsheatingup.net caught the tweet before it was pulled. However, the damage was done and news spread like wildfire spiking each cover for issue #1, especially this standard cover with 43 copies sold, giving it a 7-day trend of 588% and had a high raw sale of $27. The blank retailer variant w/ badge is getting a pretty steady $100.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: BOBA FETT
It’s confirmed that Temuera Morrison will once again play Boba Fett in Season 2 of THE MANDALORIAN. This news is pretty recent, but his first appearance in STAR WARS #42 is already beginning to move. It might be hard to top the rare CGC 9.9 sale of $6,600 back in 2016. There’s also been rumored casting news paired along with this official news of other additional MANDALORIAN 2 castings… and if even a few are true… then Star Wars books are about to go even crazier.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: DAREDEVIL DISNEY+
It’s rumored that Disney is developing a DAREDEVIL series for Disney+. While unconfirmed, this seems pretty obvious and comes as no surprise. The debate lies in whether Charlie Cox will reclaim the role (we personally hope he does).
RUMORED/OPTIONED: FABULOUS FREAK BROTHERS
DEADLINE reported casting news for this animated series, featuring: Woody Harrelson, John Goodman, Tiffany Haddish, and Pete Davidson. The project is still being shopped around.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: GHOST RIDER
According to an article on the site The Direct, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are developing a Ghost Rider project. It is believed they will not use the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider, so it is possible they will use the Johnny Blaze version of the character (1st appearance is in the already pricey Marvel Spotlight #5 – 1972).
New rumors (that have since been confirmed by Disney) are swirling again of Riri Williams aka Ironheart appearing in the MCU via a Disney+ series. These rumors pop-up every 6 months. However, we’re getting close to the one-year anniversary of the first wave of MCU Disney+ announcements. So, we are due for more official news. Regardless, prices are jumping for Riri’s first appearance in INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #7 and her first appearance as Ironheart in issue #9. All covers seem to be selling well. Issue #7’s standard cover hit $75 raw just this weekend.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: JUST BEYOND
The BOOM graphic novel by R.L. Stine is heading to Disney+, which is PERFECT for this book. Graphic Novels are hard to get big trending sales on… but we’ll keep an eye on it.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME
It was announced this week that this is finally premiering on Netflix on June 5. Will this get the post-release boost that previous Netflix/Amazon content has seen in the past?
RUMORED/OPTIONED: OLD GUARD
A press release from Netflix went out this week with a first look of Charlize Theron as Andy (aka Andromache of Scythia) in the upcoming OLD GUARD show. Looks promising!
Deadline reported that “Marc Guggenheim Set By Studio 8 To Script ‘Prophet’ From Character Hatched By ‘Deadpool’ Creator Rob Liefeld.” If you recall, Leifeld hinted at this option many months ago, creating movement for Prophets’ first appearance in this Youngblood #2 issue. Get ready, this book is on the move again.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: SECRET WARRIORS
According to the MCU rumor website MCU Cosmic, there is a Secret Warriors project underway at Marvel Studios in search of a writer. This site is often wrong so take this all with a grain of salt, but the mere mention of the project sparked immediate interest in the 1st appearance of the Secret Warriors – Mighty Avengers #13 (Marvel, 2008). The regular cover sold a mere 15 copies in the 4 months leading up to the May 6 rumor and proceeded to sell 20 copies between May 6 and 8. A 9.0 copy will run you about $14 + shipping. There’s also a 2nd print with only 5,300 initial orders that is going for around $40 on eBay. This is likely a short term price spike so be cautious about buying right now unless you can find copies at pre-spike levels. Check out the sales history on CovrPrice for the historical perspective.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: SPIDER-MAN 2099
A new rumor has surfaced that Spidey 2099 is heading to Disney+ for an unconfirmed series (whether animated or live-action). It’s been pretty clear that SPIDER-MAN INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE will feature 2099 heavily. With that said, it’s hard to believe that they would let Disney ALSO do a separate animated series. Regardless, we would LOVE to see this (especially live-action).
Shoutout to our friends at LORDS OF THE LONGBOX (who also cover our TOP 10 every week) for calling this to our attention. This spike in price & sales is what happens when someone reports misinformation and other sites run with it. Recently, there was an alleged post on Instagram from the production manager of THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER & WANDAVISION. He teased the words: Underground Liberated Totally Integrated Mobile Army To Unite Mankind (U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M.). This group has ties to Baron Zemo, Red Skull, and M.O.D.A.K. With Zemo as the main villain in FALCON, this makes sense that he would potentially command this group. HOWEVER, a scooper shared his thought that this meant the MCU was potentially building towards incorporating the widely panned Ultimate Universe “ULTIMATUM” into the upcoming MCU storyline. For those of you who don’t know the plot of this min-series, it’s about a grief-stricken Magneto (for his dead children Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver) who attempts to destroy the world through a series of global disasters (specifically those sub-oceanic earthquakes), killing a bunch of key Marvel characters in the process. Essentially, no… this is a misunderstanding and connection is by word usage only. Basically, this is a bad spec. Regardless, misinformation still spreads stronger than the truth which is causing MCU fans to chase these down.
Scout recently announced that this book is “in development as a one-hour sci-fi adventure series by screenwriter Bianca Ursillo, with Andy Cohen of Grade A Entertainment (GIFTED) and Scout Comics attached to executive produce.” The first print immediately jumped up to $20. Strangely, the rare NYCC variant (limited to 250) is still holding at $20. Regardless, no need to rush to eBay. They shared a 25% discount code (promo code: “WRETCH”) for CovrPrice users to use at the Scout Webstore. No need to rush to eBay when you can get these under “COVRPRICE”. (sorry, we saw the opportunity to use our name and we ran with it)
COMICS THE WATCHER WATCHES
WATCHING: ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 2ND PRINT (MARVE, 2011)
For years now, we’ve heard collectors ask when the 2nd print would start to move up. Well, the answer is… this week! It’s FINALLY moving as it hit $44.99 raw. Also, note that raw first prints have REALLY jumped this week at $200. With that said, as the first print moves up higher, collectors turn to the next most affordable cover… which is this 2nd print (and reveals Miles’s face).
KEY COMIC OF THE WEEK
KEY OF THE WEEK: THE CAT #1 (DC, 1972)
Patsy Walker has her highest raw sale ever at $1,250 for a “guaranteed” 9.8 raw copy. Did we miss some content news? Granted, we’ve never seen a 9.8, so this book could probably hit this high… but what a gamble. Anyways, this was a pretty notable sale.
