COVRPRICE COMIC BOOK SHAKERS
Every day CovrPrice’s Daily Shaker List calls out comics with the highest sales value sold that day. Throughout the week we pull the more interesting ones and elaborate on them here. Check out our sweet Shaker List here.
SHAKER: ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER #1 – FELIPE SMITH VEHICLE VARIANT (MARVEL, 2014)
Despite the Robbi Rodriguez Ghost Rider show getting canceled last year to focus on another GR, prices continue to increase for his first appearance. This hard to find variant hit a new high sale of $500 for a CGC 9.8.
SHAKER: ALL-NEW MARVEL NOW! POINT ONE #1 MCNIVEN 1:75 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2014)
A couple of weeks ago, this 1:75 for this first full appearance of Kamala Kahn sold for a massive $3,750 for a 9.8! Well, that was beaten by this week’s new all-time high sale of $4,999!
SHAKER: AMERICA #8 JEN BARTEL 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2017)
Man, this cover is gorgeous. It’s really not a surprise to us that this sold for $110 raw this week. See RUMORED/OPTIONED for AMERICA CHAVEZ below for more info on WHY this suddenly picked up.
SHAKER: ARCHIE #271 (ARCHIE, 1978)
The famous “Pearl Necklace” cover is highly sought after by collectors. This had a BIG sale of $1K for a CGC 9.6 this week, making it the biggest sale to date for this. It’s not clear if the writer’s of ARCHIE back in the 70’s were purposely writing euphemisms into their covers or if it was unintentional. The fact that this happened so frequently with an emphasis on the questionable phrase makes it pretty clear that they knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
SHAKER: CANTO #1 1:10 NICK ROBLES VARIANT (IDW, 2019)
Wow, CANTO is really picking up in the aftermarket. This first print recently sold a NM raw copy for $122. If you recall, MOST of the print run had damage, making any NM copy sell for a premium. The CANTO #1 1:10 NICK ROBLES VARIANT also had a big sale at $355 for a CGC 9.8. Raw copies have dried up and have been hard to find.
SHAKER: DARK NIGHTS: DEATH METAL LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHTS #1 – KAARE ANDRES 1:25 (DC, 2020)
We’ve seen plenty of hot trends hit the market. However, we have NEVER seen SO many copies of a ratio variant sell so many copies in one week … AND at such high prices. It could just be the best selling variant of all time. After a pre-sale hit a high of $350, it’s currently selling for $200 to $250. Typically, when a variant is super hot it sells maybe 50 copies the first week. If a variant is selling at $100, they tend to only sell a few copies due to them being hard to find. At COVRPRICE we’ve already tracked over 150+ sales for this one in just the last few days! What’s crazy is that there are still a ton listed. Just to put things in perspective, since 2018 we’ve tracked about 430 sales of the 1:25 Molina Venom #3 (1st Knull). This variant has reached over a quarter of those sales in just a few days. Traditionally, these can be bad signs for long term market value (and yes, the large quantity sold/available is a concern and a red flag)… but the rules have changed and this current market has proven to be quite unpredictable. For those that got a copy, there’s truly nothing better in the world of comics than that feeling of walking out of your LCS with a copy of a hot book like this (especially if you got it cheap). Oh, the first print. It’s sold about 350 copies in the past week. Which is NUTS! That makes this one of the fastest-selling new books we’ve EVER tracked. It easily beat out BATMAN DAMNED #1, which sold about 200 copies its first week and lived on our Top 10 list for months.
SHAKER: MARVEL RISING #1 – PEACH MOMOKO (1:25) (MARVEL, 2019)
With Peach Momoko fever still raging, the one that pretty much started it all is this Marvel Rising variant. This week, it hit a new all-time high raw sale at $310. This variant looks great next to Stacey Lee’s Spider-Women Alpha #1 variant.
SHAKER: MILES MORALES: ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #1 – FIONA STAPLES (1:50) (MARVEL, 2014)
Did we mention Miles yet? No? Well, here he is. This Fiona Staples 1:50 variant had a huge sale of $2,225 for a 9.8. Back in January, this 9.8 would have cost you $239.95.
SHAKER: SPAWN #189 MCFARLANE SKETCH VARIANT (IMAGE, 2009)
Wow, it’s been a while since we’ve mentioned Spawn. Well, this hard to find sketch variant had a massive sale of $3,100 for a 9.8. This destroys the last 9.8 high sale of $1,800 back in 2018.
SHAKER: SPIDER-GWEN #0 2ND PRINT (MARVEL, 2016)
Our friends at CBSI shared this 2nd print on their new MODERN PLAYBOOK youtube show. It was noted as simply being a hard-to-find/ low print reprint of EOSV #2. With that share, this once $10 book (7/10/20) jumped to its recent price of $250. These subsequent printings are CRAZY right now.
SHAKER: SPIDER-MAN #1 BLUE LIZARD ERROR (MARVEL, 1990)
In 1990, there was a well-known error where the yellow ink ran out for the interior covers, turning the LIZARD completely blue throughout the book. This was so common, that collectors mostly ignored it. However, lately, this is starting to pick up. This week, a CGC 9.4 sold $350. This is probably an error you might even have right now in your collection (go check… we’ll wait). It’s unknown if it’s throughout ALL printings. However, all the copies we’ve seen have only been in the SILVER cover. This book is everywhere. So, this is an easy and fun one to look for in the wild.
SHAKER: SPIDER-MAN #12 – RICHARD ISANOVE (1:25) (MARVEL, 2017)
This Miles/Gwen “first kiss” issue sold a 9.8 for $2,300 this week! Granted this is the first 9.8 we’ve ever seen come to market (there are only four 9.8’s on the CGC census and fourteen 9.6’s), it’s still a surprise to see it sell for SO much. This all-black cover is a tough one to find in high grade. But still, what a premium! This is really going to drive up NM+ raw values.
SHAKER: SPIDER-MEN II #1 – TEDESCO VARIANT (1:50) (MARVEL, 2017)
If you were thinking that JUST because you haven’t thought about this for a couple of weeks that it dropped in value. Nope. This leaped over the previous raw high sale of $200 with this new high raw sale of $375.
SHAKER: STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC #9 (DARK HORSE, 2006)
Wow, another $199 raw sale for the book. Folks are banking on Darth Revan appearing in season 2 of THE MANDALORIAN.
SHAKER: THOR #5 ESID RIBIC 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2020)
After we all asked if THE BLACK WINTER would take off, the answer now is a clear YES. This 1:25 variant for his first FULL appearance sold for $300 raw this week and a CGC 9.8 to $677.
SHAKER: THE ULTIMATES #1 2ND PRINT (MARVEL, 2016)
As mentioned with SPIDER-GWEN #0, low-print subsequent printings are all the rage right now. This issue is the first appearance of LIFEBRINGER GALACTUS (where his powers were reversed and he RESTORED planets) of which there is speculation that Galactus will once again (as destined) become the Lifebringer during (or at the end) of Donnie Cate’s BLACK WINTER storyline. While the first print of this issue is doing great at $30, this 2nd print sold for $125 raw this week.
SHAKER: VENOM #4 3RD PRINT (MARVEL, 2018)
Yep, another subsequent printing. However, Knull is on this cover which is the main driving force behind these sales. It had two new highs: a raw sale at $320.50 and a CGC 9.8 sale of $500.
SHAKER: YOUNG AVENGERS #1 (MARVEL, 2005)
This is a book that we’ve been telling people to pick since we started this site. And yeah, many other sites/ youtube channels have also shared this book. There’s a reason, it’s simply a no-brainer. Being packed with first appearances, this will most likely be an important book for the MCU phase 4. And not just that, key Marvel comic storylines (like Captain Marvel) also have characters like HULKLING front and center. It’s no longer one to watch, as it’s officially here. This week a CGC 9.8 had a new high sale of $495. The sketch variant also JUST recently sold for $911 in a CGC 9.8.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: AMERICA CHAVEZ
Screen Rant recently reported that “Marvel Studios is reportedly casting a teenage girl to play America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Her first appearance is in VENGEANCE #1, and then appears in each issue of that mini-series. Of course, this news in driving prices up across MANY of her key books and covers (we mentioned Jen Bartel’s variant above). Some others that are taking off: AMERICA #2 ART ADAMS (1:50), THE ULTIMATES 2 #1 MIKE DEODATO (1:10). We recently had an internal debate when America’s first appearance OUTSIDE of the Vengeance series. That led us to MARVEL POINT ONE #1 (2012) (obviously, LOTS of Point Ones are hot right now). We discovered that her first appearance in her updated/current look was in this issue. See below for how she looked in VENGEANCE and her appearance in MARVEL POINT ONE. Keep in mind, this is really just “fun” information and doesn’t have any weight on her first appearance.
APPEARANCE IN VENGEANCE #1 (2011)
She appears and acts older in this issue with an 80’s influenced costume.
APPEARANCE IN MARVEL NOW POINT ONE #1 (2012) What a difference a year makes!
Here she appears younger and how she typically looks today.
RUMORED/OPTIONED: THE BLUE MARVEL #1 (MARVEL, )
Our friends at LORDS OF THE LONG BOX posted a recent video citing sources that suggest Marvel is considering THE BLUE MARVEL for the MCU. Keep in mind that the keyword is CONSIDERING. Whether he appears or not, his first appearance is already insanely expensive and way outside most of our price ranges. BUT, we’ll be watching for more news!
WHAT THE WATCHER IS WATCHING
WATCHING: BITTER ROOT #1 BORDERLANDS VARIANT (MARVEL, 2020)
Bitter Root is a book you should start paying close attention to. It’s still actively in development, though it’s unknown when we’ll get more news. However, the first print and it’s standard variants are still reasonably priced and sell for $10 to $15 (except the virgin variant which recently is selling for $30 to $50). Now, the store variants are another story, as they have been recently spiking, The MyComicShop Akira homage is now a $250 raw book. Adding to that list is the BORDERLANDS variant, which had a big sale of $175.99 for a NM+ raw copy. Keep in mind that this was previously selling for $10. So, this big jump COULD be a fluke. However, based on the high MCS Akira price, maybe this is just catching up. One to watch!
KEY COMIC OF THE WEEK
KEY OF THE WEEK: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #667 1:100 DELL’OTTO VARIANT (MARVEL, 2011)
The KING of modern variants has some hefty competition lately. However, he still reigns supreme. This week a CGC 8.5 sold for $4,800! Long live the King!
