New Comic Book Day: June 19th, 2024
June 18th, 2024

By Lefteros
Know before you go! This NCBD has some sneaky good books and great covers up for grabs on the spinner rack. This is the type of NCBD line-up that, once upon a time, had me waking up with sheer excitement to hit my LCS when I was young and didn't FOC everything in advance—plenty to be excited about. Let's get into it!
COVRPRICE TIP: Below are some of this week's releases sorted by the highest market value. If you visit the NEW RELEASE section, you can filter by "Est Value (Highest to Lowest)." Make sure to check it out before heading to your local comic shop. If you miss something, no worries! We have a DAY AFTER WEDNESDAY article every Thursday, highlighting the best new release trends. Don't forget to check in regularly to see the current Fair Market Value (FMV) with our handy dandy comic book price guide for each comic book.
OPEN ORDER SELECTIONS
With this title dropping every couple of weeks, it's sometimes hard to gauge and predict what will happen at FOC. The cover made us think that this may be the first appearance of Peter Parker as the Spider-Goblin. We now know that was in issue #51. Still, this marks his first cover appearance and will likely be a book that fans of these homages want a copy of!

This J. Michael Straczynski continues to sneak in new first appearances. This issue, in particular, features the first appearance of a character named Seer. At one point, it seems like she will be on Cap's side, but spoiler alert, it looks like she may be playing both sides. Is she a hero or a villain? We will soon find out, but this issue marks her first appearance!

DESTRO #1 COVER A ANDREI BRESSAN | SKYBOUND
There are a lot of great things going on in new comic books lately, but Energon Universe has to be at the top of that list. It is so much fun seeing what kind of a spin Robert Kirkman and his team at Skybound will put on the G.I. Joe and Transformers characters we know and love. This issue marks the Energon Universe introduction of Tomax and Xamot, who will be Destro's antagonists to start this series. With the talent behind this mini-series and the shared universe in general, it's well worth considering pretty much every first issue!

I was curious what the solicitation meant when it stated that this was Disney and Marvel's first-ever team-up. After reading this issue written by Jason Aaron, it is pretty clear. This is a Marvel-style book, featuring my personal favorite Disney character, Uncle Scrooge. This is a leap from standard Disney comics that are more one-off stories. I think this brand of continuity is exactly what made the Duck Tales show so amazing, and I think it's long overdue in comic books.
This issue introduces us to the latest Disney villain as well. Known as the Scrooge-Above-All. How Marvel does that sound? The cover price is high, but the covers are so good, I think this one will be hard to resist for comic book fans, and almost impossible to resist for those of us who are fans of Disney and Uncle Scrooge!

Another new Venom character, but this one is from a highly successful video game franchise. This is the first appearance of the Venom from the Earth-1048 Insomniac Games reality. What makes this character most interesting is that in this reality, Venom is none other than Harry Osborn. Talk about a twist on two classic characters. I think the video game angle and the fact that Earth-1048 Venom is so different than any others that came before him make this one worth checking out!

COVER SELECTIONS
Nate Szerdy has a lot of devoted fans, which makes a lot of his covers pretty notable. He has been putting out some solid work for DC Comics since he signed on, and this homage to classic Animated Adventures comic covers featuring both Supergirl and Batgirl is no exception!

DESTRO #1 COVER J JASON HOWARD ENERGON UNIVERSE ANNIVERSARY CONNECTING BLACK AND WHITE VARIANT | SKYBOUND

This is the second to last installment of this great Energon Universe Connecting Variant set that commemorates the first anniversary of this smash-hit shared universe. There is one more to go, and that will be for the next issue of Void Rivals, where it all began. I can't wait to complete both versions of this set!
This was absent from my FOC list because there was no artwork available. I waited and waited and even checked in on the Monday deadline in case they had some kind of cover art preview. There was still nothing. So, I set a reminder to check the following week, but there is still nothing. I only saw this cover when it started arriving with weekly shop release shipments. I think it was well worth the wait. It probably took extra time because the Todd-Father was putting in some extra work with this one. If that was the case, it shows. I think that no art at FOC may have kept orders down, and thus the print run. For $2.99, I don't think Spawn and McFarlane fans like me should overlook this one!

This particular variant caught my attention after reading this issue for two specific reasons. First, it features the Scrooge-Above-All. Second, it is by a great Disney artist who also worked on the interior. Granted, the Scrooge-Above-All is also on the foil variant, but I think this particular one may have more upside. This is my open-order cover of choice for this book, and that says a lot about all the great artists who did variants for this book!

INCENTIVE SELECTIONS
I love this cover, but I did not feature it at FOC because it had a Retailer Exclusive Variant attached, and I figured supply may be high. This is the third time that a Retailer Exclusive Variant did not hurt a DC Comics Incentive Variant too badly. I guess it is somewhat offset by how few other shops qualify for any. Copies are looking scarce on eBay, and there has been a sale for $75. The cheapest copy listed is well over $100. We may be about to see some fireworks!

This is your typical stunning cover that was featured on the first print, with a trade dress being used as the cover art for a 1:25 virgin incentive on a later printing. There is no doubt about it: this is a great-looking Peach Momoko cover, and it's nice to see it as a virgin. Then factor in that this is a book that features multiple first-in-story appearances for New Champions Variant characters, and we have a pretty perfect storm. This is the reason the open-order version of this book will have trouble maintaining value. We have already seen a sale for this book at $100 on eBay, and the cheapest copies are sitting at $150. It will be interesting to see where this ends up when the dust settles!

I said the Lorenzo Pastrovicchio variant was my favorite open-order variant for this book because it featured the Scrooge-Above-All. This one does not. But it does feature Uncle Scrooge sitting with his Infinity Dime and is by an artist who always seems to nail this character. While this Gabriele Dell'Otto Variant is only a 1:10, I think it has classic potential. It is currently only selling for around $10 on eBay, which is not too far off the $7.99 cover price.
Now, with that guilty pleasure out of the way. Let's talk about how quickly copies of the 1:50 by J. Scott Campbell have been drying up at $50. Pretty stunning. Currently, the cheapest listing available is sitting at $70. And, of course, we should also mention the high 1:100 ratio by Pepe Larraz, which is holding firm at the $90 to $100 range. Will be interesting to see which of these three ends up having the most upside long-term, but for me, it's all about that wicked-looking 1:10!

LATER PRINTING SELECTIONS
I like that this printing has an all-new original cover by Paco Medina featuring the first cover appearance of The Assembly. What I don't love is that there is an incentive attached that will absorb most of its value. I like this new team and think it has great potential, which is why this book is on the list. That being said, it will likely take quite a bit of heat for it to maintain or gain value at any point. The 1:25, on the other hand, has exploded!

This issue not only featured the second appearance of the Darkhold Child, which we all knew from the variant cover, but it also featured the surprise first appearance of a new character named Pia. This is another re-colored later printing, but these characters have enough potential, and this Blood Soaked cover look is enough to gain my attention. Also, there is no incentive attached to this one!

Some people are frustrated with all these Ultimate Spider-Man #1 Marco Checchetto costume variants popping up on later printings. This is the first one we are getting on a later issue featuring Superior Spider-Man. While I understand people's frustration, I love this Superior Spider-Man depiction so much, as well as Marco Checcetto's art in general. As far as I am concerned, keep them coming!

That's all for this week, folks! Although I love so many of the books we covered in the article (and even a couple we didn't), it is important to use this information to form your own opinion on which of these books you may want to add to your collection.
For example, if you don't like Disney properties, you could and should skip the new Uncle Scrooge book. Or, if you avoid comic books that have new versions of characters from other universes, you may want to pass on Venomverse Reborn. These posts are not meant to endorse the purchase of any of the books featured on them; they are only about sharing what we know so that you can make informed decisions at the spinner rack. Happy hunting!
