OPEN ORDER SELECTIONS
If there was ever a time to start caring about all these new 2099 characters Steve Orlando has been introducing lately, this may be it. This issue will mark the first appearance of Jonah Marlo, a Silver Surfer who acts as a herald of Mephisto. I read this, and it is even cooler than it sounds!

J. Michael Straczynski continues to introduce new interesting characters in this Cap run and yet it seems to be flying under the radar. This issue starts by introducing us to Malik and his Guardian and ends with another surprise. A male personification of what appears to be Death. The cameo at the end is intriguing and has me looking forward to the next issue already!

EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS #1 COVER A LEE BERMEJO | ONI PRESS
After more than 65 years, we are finally getting the return of EC Comics courtesy of ONI Press. Starting with this first title, ONI Press seems committed to not only relaunching this iconic brand but also carrying on its legacy the right way. They are bringing incredible creators to the table, including Brian Azzarello, Chris Condon, and Stephanie Phillips. That's just for the issue!

HELLO DARKNESS #1 COVER A PAOLO RIVERA | BOOM! STUDIOS
Not to be outdone, BOOM! Studios are launching their own horror anthology. Would you look at that, it has the same release date as Epitaphs from the Abyss. Interesting. This one has some great creators involved as well, including James Tynion IV who is writing a SIKTC story throughout the first six issues. There's nothing like a little competition to get horror fans talking. This should be a lot of fun!

Nice House on the Lake is back! Only this sequel is called Nice House by the Sea and has an all-new cast. The first series did very well on release and started selling for double and triple cover price in a hurry. This series has a lot of fans, it will be interesting to see how this does. One thing is for certain: if you liked the first part, you would likely like this one!

NYX #1 MAIN COVER SARA PICHELLI | MARVEL
This is another solid effort as part of the X-Men From the Ashes reboot. My expectations were not as high for this issue as with X-Men #1 but this was a fine start to this series. I was not too crazy about being greeted by a QR code at the end of the issue. No doubt this page was supposed to feature a cameo appearance of a new character, but it looks like we will have to wait for the next issue. I hope this replacing pages with a QR code is not something we will see again after these first issues. Call me old-fashioned, but I think if a character was meant to make a cameo appearance in a book, I think they should do it in print!

ROOK EXODUS #4 COVER A JASON FABOK | GHOST MACHINE
The last issue introduced us to over a dozen new Warden characters, but only a couple had more than a cameo. This issue brings us the first full appearance of one of the more interesting ones, Kaa, Warden of Pythons. The entire Ghost Machine lineup continues to impress me, and Rook is leading the way!

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 COVER A RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE | IDW PUBLISHING
Welcome to a new direction for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles courtesy of Jason Aaron. This should be interesting. As you would expect, this book has a ton of variants, including a multitude of Artist and Retailer Exclusive Variants. When I see cover clutter like that, it makes Cover A all the more attractive. You know purchases of this book will be spread across the dozens of variants, and when people want to collect the full run, many will want Cover A. I think this is a pretty good value, and this cover, in particular, may not have as high a print run as may be expected!

I can see people thumbing their noses at another new Venomverse character being introduced, and that is fine by me. All I would like to say about it is that while many new Venom versions are being introduced in books like this, not all of them are equal. Some end up having surprisingly great stories. This one, in particular, should be one of the better ones. Not only does the Viking-style character design and aesthetic look great but it is written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson. Easily one of my favorite Marvel writers right now!

The first issue introduced us to a mysterious character who claimed their name was Stranger. I am not so sure if that's their actual name, and even in this issue, it's not clear. We do see her superhero form, though, and she takes Zatanna to the Place of Casters, where we are introduced to the Celestial, leader of casters. Then, at the end of the issue, we are introduced to a bunny-looking female character. I'm not sure what her name is either. This series is a lot of fun, but not very clear with character names!

COVER SELECTIONS
Another Movie Variant for the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine movie. The ones we have seen so far have been stills featuring Deadpool. This one, on the other hand, features the friendship locket we have seen in promotional materials for the movie. I think the relevance this has in pop culture makes it worth considering this week!

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 COVER G BLACK VARIANT | IDW PUBLISHING
Interestingly enough, we don't get TMNT Blank Variants often, and as a result, those that have been released in the past, have been slowly creeping in value—no surprise with the popularity of the property. You just know that every time there is a signing event that offers sketches or a convention, TMNT fans will want a couple of blanks. If you're on the fence about picking this book up because of the print run or the cover clutter, this and Cover A are pretty safe bets!

INCENTIVE SELECTIONS
I had a feeling this would be a great version of the Silver Surfer, and sure enough, it is. Each of these Annihilation 2099 incentives has been doing very well in the aftermarket, which has pretty much set the stage for this one to go nuclear. Currently, there are only three copies on eBay. The two in the USA are priced at $85 and $90; there is one from a Canadian seller for $50. What makes this wild is that there have been multiple sales for $85. This book is on fire. Consider yourself lucky if you can get one anywhere near the ratio price. I am curious to see if this heat spreads to the open-order books because this is easily one of the best 2099 stories ever!

I had a strong feeling that this was going to be scorching hot leading up to release. While I fully expect ONI Press to print a healthy amount of the open-order covers, I think the incentives, particularly this one, will be what people want. It features the first cover appearance of three all-new Horror Hosts. As a result, it is selling steadily for $150 on eBay, and I think this one may keep going as the week goes on!

So far, this book has not quite exploded. It saw some presales for $50, which were no doubt die-hard fans of the first series securing their copies, but it has slowed down. There are copies available for $20 or less on eBay right now. Mind you, there are not many copies, and I still think this book can take off this week!

We all saw this coming from a mile away. Artgerm always puts out wicked covers, but not all his covers are created equal. Every so often, we get one like this, with a fan-favorite character, no Exclusive Variants attached, that he hits out of the park. The perfect Artgerm storm. When that happens, it is not unusual to see these incentives hit double ratio. With copies selling steadily for $175, it may pay off to be patient or perhaps opt for the cover price trade dress, open order version!

I don't think Viking Venom is the greatest version of Venom ever, but he is pretty cool, and Derrick Chew did a great job with this depiction. It seems like Venom comics in general are pretty cold right now, which means that there may not be as many preorders for books like this. That keeps supply in check, especially when we don't have an Exclusive Variant in play. As a result, we have already seen this sell for a best offer on a $200 eBay listing. Only three copies are listed right now for right around the price point. It will be interesting to see if anyone else scoops one up for that price!

Jenny Frison has some devoted fans. Even though this book is so similar to the open order minimal trade dress version, and there is an SDCC Exclusive Foil Variant (shoutout Bird City Comics) of this same cover, it is holding strong as can be. Copies of this one are going for between $40 and $50 on eBay. That's nearly double the ratio. Every so often, we have artists who have such strong fanfare that they can defy factors that usually cause a variant like this to tank. If you want a copy of this, you may want to hold off and see if you can score one closer to ratio, or perhaps pick up an extremely similar-looking open order!

LATER PRINTING SELECTIONS
This first issue keeps getting reprinted, and it keeps selling out, so they keep reprinting it. No doubt about it, these do not have a heavy overprint, which is a good thing. I like that, unlike the third printing, which was a simple recolor of the first printing, this one is a whole new cover by interior artist Ze Carlos. Spawn fans love collecting later printings with tight print runs, so this one may end up being something if this version of the character continues to gain traction!

That's it for this week, folks! Talk about a busy week for peak summer. So many great books and exciting first issues. Our trip to the LCS or favorite online shop can put a dent in our vacation funds. I hope this article helps you make some informed decisions on what you may want to pick up. Remember, just because a book is featured in this article, it doesn't mean it will ever be worth anything and just because a book is not in this article it doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. I just try to share whatever information I have, paired with my opinion and, for what it's worth, my insight. Happy hunting!
