JOE, MAD MAX, CAMACHO, GUNDUM, POWER RANGERS, and so many other comics from all ends of the comic spectrum!
SHAKERS OF THE WEEK
These are all comic books that hit our daily SHAKERS list. This list refreshes EVERY day, so don't miss out!
SHAKER: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #346 - NEWSSTAND l MARVEL l 1991
Amazing Spider-Man issue #345 is one of the more memorable covers from the early 90s run, featuring some incredible work by artist and Image Comics Co-Founder/CFO Erik Larsen (Savage Dragon). Larsen took over the title for Todd McFarlane on issue #329, and his work during Marvel's first laps with one of its newer villains (Venom) consistently changes hands on the aftermarket. This week, a graded 9.8 newsstand copy of ASM #346 hit an all-time high in a big way at $685. This outpaces the previous high of $575 in 2021. Additionally, this clears the most recent sale of this book at this grade by over $400. The high sale can generally be attributed to scarcity, as 9.8 copies have only changed hands around eight times since 2019. Comparatively, the direct edition has had around 100 sales since 2014. While the overall scarcity of newsstand issues can lead to some big numbers, jumps like this often drive increases across the board for other versions (a 9.4 direct version of this book has also hit an all-time high within the last three weeks). Given those trends, this is certainly one to keep an eye out for when shopping, and with a cover like this, it's hard to miss.

SHAKER: CAMACHO #1 - ERIC ZOUEH SKOTNES - 2024 SDCC - SIGNED BY TERRY CREWS (LIMITED 2020) | SUPER SERIOUS | 2024
By Ron Reyes
"Makin' my way downtown, walkin' fast, faces pass, and I'm homebound..." he hummed while skillfully sneaking past security and the 23 members of the X-23 cosplay crew. All kidding aside, would people even remember this Vanessa Carlton song without Terry Crews? Or did Vanessa Carlton's song finally put Crews on the map? Either way, we're not here to talk about the movie White Chicks but rather the super-sneakiest-secret drop of San Diego Comic-Con 2024! Terry Crews and his self-published company, Super Serious, decided to drop a bomb on the con with Issue #1 of Camacho! All of his lunacy goes back to the 2006 film Idiocracy, starring Crews as the whacked-out President Camacho. Crews and company decided what better way to bring back his favorite character than to revive him in a comic! Besides dropping off 1000 copies in San Diego, Super Serious distributed this book across select comic shops throughout the US, with 2020 total copies. As you could have guessed, peeps have been going bonkers trying to snag one, and with the current FMV of $120 and climbing, it's no wonder it's one of the Top 10 convention books from the event!

SHAKER: DANGER GIRL/G.I. JOE #2 - J. SCOTT CAMPBELL - COVER B | IDW | 2012
J. Scott Campbell is one of the preeminent modern cover artists in the game and consistently appears on the Weekly Top 10 and Shakers Report. He started his career by co-creating Gen13, then moved on to co-creating a book about sexy secret agents called Danger Girl. Danger Girl has done a few crossovers over the years, but some of Campbell’s best covers for the crossovers have come in this series. There are connecting covers for issues #2 through #4, each with an accompanying sketch cover. However, the two stars of this series are the Scarlett variant for issue #2 and the Baroness variant for issue #3. Both issues have similar raw NM values, with #2 at $130 and #3 at $163, but this week saw Scarlett vault ahead of the Baroness with a graded 9.8 sale of $400 on July 29th. This is significant as the last sale of a graded 9.8 for the Baroness variant was only $185 just last month, with an all-time high of $255. With G.I. Joe’s shift to Image comics deemed a success, look for older G.I. Joe variants to continue to pick up steam in the after-market.

SHAKER: THE COMICS JOURNAL ISSUE #117 | FANTAGRAPHICS | 1977
By Matthew Glover, ESQ.
The Comics Journal is a magazine that covers the art of comics. It has a reputation for its in-depth analysis, interviews, and reviews, focusing on both mainstream and alternative comics. The magazine has been published since 1976 and is known for its critical and scholarly approach to comics as an art form. It has featured interviews with significant figures in the comics industry and played a vital role in discussing and appreciating comics as a serious medium. Issue #117 features a cover of Dave Stevens drawn by Dave Stevens. Collectors have been searching high and low for art by Stevens, which could be due in part to the scarcity of his work on the market or the movie Drawn to Perfection, which focuses on Stevens. While he is best known for his original creation, The Rocketeer, he has a wide portfolio of cheesecake and good girl art. This cover is poking fun not only at himself and those types of covers but also the journal itself. Recently, a 9.6 sold for $2,500.

SHAKER: FREE SCOTT PILGRIM FREE COMIC BOOK DAY EDITION | ONI PRESS | 2006
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Scott Pilgrim, and collectors everywhere are celebrating by picking up all sorts of interesting and unique collectibles related to our favorite pop culture love story. Scott Pilgrim is undoubtedly one of the most influential graphic novels of our time, and fans worldwide love it as much today as ever. Throughout the releases of its various reprinted editions, the smash-hit movie, and the gorgeous anime adaptation that saw most of the original cast return to provide the voiceover, people have had plenty of content to feast on in the Scott Pilgrim universe despite the core story never changing. Decade-marking anniversaries tend to provide the highest peaks of hype around a franchise outside of its initial release, and this has been no different. Oni Press has celebrated with several special printings. Bryan Lee O'Malley has been making appearances, including a large presence at the preeminent SDCC, and fans are digging up obscure comic books as usual. One such obscure comic is the topic of discussion for today, which just so happens to be a nifty little Free Comic Book Day issue. FCBD books continue to be hot topics with collectors despite having considerably more eyes on them than they used to, and issues such as this that were released all the way back in 2006 tend to be significantly rarer. They were usually left out in stacks, which is not ideal for maintaining mint condition, and now that is been almost two decades since this particular book was released, the amount of copies in the wild is surely dwindling. Additionally, this book is a key issue because it is the first solo standard Scott Pilgrim book ever (his first standard comic appearance was in this 2005 FCBD issue of COMICS FESTIVAL). This perfect storm of hype-building details culminated in a recent all-time high sale of $350 for a CGC 9.6 copy of this book, and I can't help but wonder if it can break the $1000 mark if a 9.8 copy ever surfaces.

SHAKER: GHOSTBUSTERS: LEGION #1 - SDCC 2004 (LIMITED 1000) | 88MPH STUDIOS | 2004
Few franchises hold the nostalgic and pop culture clout of the Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters: Legion #1 - SDCC 2004 variant from 88MPH Studios is a prime example of a coveted collector's item that embodies the spirit of this beloved franchise. Limited to just 1,000 copies, this edition was a highlight at San Diego Comic-Con 2004, making it a rare gem for fans and collectors alike. The 88MPH run featured a more serious and darker take on the Ghostbusters. A full series was planned after this 4-issue mini-series, but the Canadian Publisher had severe delays in between issues and also dealt with hard financial woes. Hence, the continued series never came to be. Ironically, compared to today's practices, fans and collectors complained about these issues having too many covers (the first issue had seven), and this was another reason the series wasn't widely accepted in 2004. The last recorded sale of a Near Mint (NM) raw copy fetched $125, marking the highest known value for raw copies. This sale is particularly notable given the limited number of transactions; only six recorded sales exist, comprising four raw and two slabbed copies. The next closest raw sale was a Fine (F) condition copy, which sold for $50 in December 2023. Adding to the intrigue of this variant is its place within a trio of equally limited editions, each capped at 1,000 copies. These include the Graham Crackers Comics Exclusive and the Toyzz Exclusive variant, both of which contribute to the overall allure and collectability of the Ghostbusters: Legion series. As the franchise continues to evolve and attract new generations of fans, the allure and value of such rare collectibles are only poised to grow.

SHAKER : GI JOE #2 SDCC PANEL EXCLUSIVE | SKYBOUND | 2024
By Van Denby
The acquisition of both Transformers and GI Joe created a massive wave of excitement nearly a year ago when Void Rivals #1 dropped a secret cover for their 1:100 variant that revealed the inclusion of the Transformers. Since then, several titles from both Transformers and GI Joe have continued to keep fans excited for the shared universe. This past weekend, Skybound had various panels, and in each panel was a giveaway ashcan comic for GI Joe. There are four different covers, and all seem to be rare in comparison to your standard store variant or ratio variant. This particular cover features the iconic Cobra logo and has been selling quite well. This week saw a high sale of $250 for an NM copy. All 4 of these ashcan variants will be highly sought after by GI Joe fans, and the low printed amount will surely keep prices high

SHAKER: GI JOE #252 LOUW VARIANT | IDW | 2018
By Van Denby
Warren Louw is an artist and illustrator who has been in the comics industry since his now iconic cover for Power Girl #27 in 2011. Since that cover, Louw has become much more of a household name, and his story has continued to rise along with demand. Covers such as his variants for Gun Honey, Wonder Woman, and Action Comics are all examples of some of his work that has experienced growth in both demand and aftermarket prices. Another such variant cover, GI Joe #252, has also seen similar growth with fans and collectors. This past week, a raw NM copy sold for $100, $35 more than the previous high sale in July of this year ($65). Many of Louw's variants are experiencing price increases as his fanbase grows, so keep an eye out for any of his earlier covers when found for a good price.

SHAKER: GREEN LANTERN #15 | DC | 1945
Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern from the Golden Age, A has been in and out of the spotlight at DC as creators have focused more on Hal and the rest of the Corps. That's not to say the character has been ignored, as he was a large part of Geoff John's wonderful JSA run in the early 2000s and a major player in the Earth-2 series that released in the early 2010s with the creation of the New 52. More recently, Scott was featured in a miniseries (Alan Scott: The Green Lantern) and is expected to play a major role in the new ongoing JSA series penned by storytelling legend Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Essex County, Trillium). In recent weeks, there has been an uptick in new all-time highs for Scott's original adventures, and this is a prime example. A CGC graded 5.0 found its way to a huge sale of $1,400, toppling the next highest sale by over $700. The most interesting fact is that the previous all-time high was a 6.0, a full point higher grade than this copy. On the current census, there are only 37 total graded copies of this book and only 2 with a 5.0 grade. With those kinds of numbers, it should come as no shock to see one of these go for such lofty prices. There could be some speculation here as well with announcements of Green Lantern properties from the James Gunn-helmed DC Studios (and their fancy new-old branding); however, nothing featuring Scott as the Green Lantern as been announced as of yet.

SHAKER: KENDRICK VS DRAKE SDCC BIRD CITY EXCLUSIVE | BLACK CANVAS | 2024
By Van Denby
Kendrick Lamar and Drake are two of the most successful and influential artists of this generation. They have both had massive success on the charts and received awards and acclaim from fans and critics alike. Their battle/feud consisted of 9 diss tracks and has bled over into pop culture as a whole as K. Dot's "Not Like Us" has set many records for streams and sales for a rap/hip-hop artist.
This rap battle has been "adapted" into a comic that was sold exclusively at SDCC 2024 and online from Bird City Comics. The book also has QR codes throughout the book that link to each individual diss track from each artist. This exclusive was limited to only 125 copies, with each copy also being numbered.Blank Canvas published the book in collaboration with the artist Tillavision. Blank Canvas and Tillavision put out a similar pop culture mash-up book in SDCC 2023 when they released the Musk vs Zuck comic. This book experienced some success on the aftermarket as well upon release. While there appeared to be some sales via online streaming, our one verified sale is an auction that ended August 1 at $103 for an NM raw copy. Fans and collectors will definitely seek this book out once word gets around that it exists, as it has cross-over potential with those fans who aren't typically associated with or interested in comics. It will be interesting to see how many copies are put up for sale moving forward, as many will surely be tucked away into collections.

SHAKER: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: NUX & IMMORTAN JOE #1 | DC | 2015
With Mad Max: Furiosa hitting streaming last month, those who missed out on the epic in theaters got a chance to watch it. For those who saw it, many walked away praising the more nuanced look we got of the main villain, Immortan Joe. Also clocking in as the villain of Mad Max: Fury Road, Immortan Joe has a long history that wasn't displayed in the films. Thankfully, we were treated to this prequel before Fury Road dropped, detailing the origin of Immortan Joe and War Boy, Nux. While the recent Mad Max films have been cinematic triumphs, the box office return hasn't been as stellar. It's dulled some of the talks around the IP but hasn't dulled the fan's interest in it! Now more than ever, new generations of fans are discovering newer films, investing their time in the classics, and branching out toward ancillary titles such as this. That's caused a rise in attention toward this under-the-radar book and, subsequently, a rise in value. Recently, an NM raw copy sold for $90, a massive jump from the previous high sale of $31 for the same grade the month prior. It's been rising since Furiosa debuted, and it spans nearly all grades. NM+ raw copies have gone from $20 last year to $50 in June of this year, and most recently settling around $70. Graded copies have experienced a similar trajectory, albeit not the same volume as raw copies. Still, the data reveals that fan engagement surrounding the series is happening, which gives hope that the community may receive more iterations of the Mad Max world to enjoy.

SHAKER: MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #122 - GONI MONTES - 2024 SDCC BLIND BAG - GREEN/WHITE RANGER (LIMITED 50) | BOOM! STUDIOS | 2024
By Xavier
On August 28, 1993, the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted and changed the lives of 90s kids forever. Many iterations of Rangers have followed in their footsteps, but fans always find their way back to the original Mighty Morphin team. The comic series, focused on the original team, has also had a strong run, hitting issue #122 with this exclusive! Although not an original member, the Green Ranger/Tommy Oliver is arguably the most popular Power Ranger. This was thanks to the late Jason David Frank, who brought a gravitas to the character and continued to promote the ranger well beyond the show’s culmination. During this past San Diego Comic Con, BOOM! Studios released blind bags with extremely limited exclusive covers for $25 a bag. Those blind bags quickly soared in price on the aftermarket, selling for $75 on average. Additionally, the rarest of these covers was the Green Ranger/White Ranger helmet cover. The book is limited to a print run of 50 copies. The first sale for this cover was recently completed, and it went for a monstrous $450! This makes it the highest aftermarket sale for any 2024 SDCC exclusive! EBay currently only has one additional listing active, with an asking price of $1000! Fans of the Power Ranger helmet covers are going to have a hard time tracking this cover down. However, considering that there are still sealed blind bags moving on the aftermarket, there may still be copies of this book that have yet to be opened. Will you opt for a guaranteed purchase or take a risk with a blind bag?

SHAKER: MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM WING COMIC #1 | TOKYOPOP | 2000
The rise of Mecha anime stretches back to the 1940s but didn’t become popular until the 1970s with anime such as Brave Raideen in Japan and the Shogun Warrior toys in the United States. Mobile Suit Gundam, which came out in 1979, could be considered the beginning of the real robot era, described as robots being used as machines and mass-produced by the military or private businesses. Gundam was compared to Star Wars, as it was a gritty space opera that went on to much success with decades of anime, novels, films, manga, and video games. Its first US appearance in a comic book was Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 #1, released in 1999, while the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing comic was released a year later. The new trailer for the Netflix animation was shown at San Diego Comic-Con just last week and may have influenced one collector to spend an all-time high of $355 on a graded 9.8. With only 17 graded copies (8 being graded 9.8) on the CGC census, looking in those back bins for NM copies of these early mecha comic books may be worthwhile.

SHAKER: THE SUIT | DC | 2014
By Matt DeVoe
I love seeing books I never knew existed. Especially when it's a Jim Lee cover! Created during the "New 52" era of DC comics, this issue features the first appearance of "The Suit" and his alter ego name, Paul Henderson. The writer, known by the pen name 'Scout Moriel,' co-created the character alongside Jim Lee, who provided the opportunity to see his superhero come to life in print through the Make-A-Wish Foundation after being diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. As noted, Jim Lee created the original character designs based on Scout's descriptions and illustrated the cover, while Eddie Nunez created the interior art. The original artwork was given to Scout, inscribed with "For Scout, Best" and signed by Jim Lee. It's not confirmed, but it appears the printed copies, limited to 350, were offered through the GIVE COMICS HOPE charity organization. Not only was this a special, unique book designed to raise money for charity, but its scarcity today commands huge aftermarket premiums like this week's all-time high of $699 for a CGC 9.4! That's a big jump from the last 9.4 sale in December 2022 of $190. There are 12 copies on the CGC census, with only one 9.8.

SHAKER: THUNDERBOLTS #7 - PHIL NOTO VARIANT (1:50) | MARVEL | 2013
What an interesting run. Back in 2013, the Thunderbolts were awesome but not major market shakers. There just wasn’t an abundance of fan interest, making the variants for this run a little harder to find. The first five issues only received a 1:50 variant; issue #6 was skipped before this 1:50 variant from Phil Noto was released. It would be the last 1:50 variant until issue #20. But fans of the run may have been completely out of luck at the time of release. Rarely would an LCS order 50 copies of this run to secure the variant, as it was cool but not groundbreaking. The market is slim for killer variants like this, so fans who want it might have to drop a pretty penny to secure it. With the groundwork the MCU has been laying for the team and the project on the horizon, one fan thought now was the time to secure a copy. Recently, an NM raw copy hit the market and sold for $120, up close to $40 from the last high sale of $83 in January. For perspective, the last CGC 9.8 sold back in 2022 for $55. With so few copies in circulation, the market is a ghost town for this book. There are only 24 total copies of this variant on the CGC census, with the raw market likely being slightly more robust. It just doesn’t change hands often, but with the rise in Thunderbolt hype, there has been a rise in listings. Value is rising steadily after being at the ratio for years, and with the movie on the horizon, it could see another bump.

KEY OF THE WEEK
SHAKER: OFFICIAL HISTORY OF BONGO COMICS ASHCAN | BONGO | 1993
By Matt DeVoe
Bongo Comics was founded in 1993 by Matt Groening, Steve Vance, Cindy Vance, and Bill Morrison to publish comic books featuring characters and stories from Groening's popular television series, "The Simpsons." Although there were numerous magazine, prototype, and unofficial appearances, Simpsons Comics & Stories #1 is credited as the first official comic appearance of the Simpsons, printed by the Welsh Publishing Group in January 1993.
Later that year, Bongo Comics released a limited to 750 Ashcan edition, noted as the official first published Bongo comic, to comic fans at the 1993 San Diego Comic Con. The interior featured a series of original homage covers with various Simpsons characters playing the roles of made-up heroes and heroines, along with fictionalized descriptions and publication dates (e.g., Edna Krabappel: Queen of the Congo featuring Edna resembling Sheena, Headlight Comics #1 with Otto as a milkman holding a damsel in distress, and Itchy & Scratchy homaging Mickey Mouse).
Original copies of the ashcan included a backing board that promoted Simpsons #1 (on sale in November), Itchy & Scratchy #1 (on sale in November), Bartman #1 (on sale in December), and Radioactive Man #1 (on sale in December). Bongo Comics eventually shuttered in October 2018 with Simpsons Comics #245. Despite this, the company left behind a notable impact on the comic industry and featured a variety of immensely collectible series that ranged from numerous Simpsons comics to SpongeBob SquarePants and Futurama. The great scarcity and collectibility of this ashcan are highlighted by this week's massive sale of $715 for a raw copy, making it a must-have for any Simpsons collector.

WHAT THE WATCHER WATCHES

GHOST RIDER #19 LUCIANO VECCHIO NEW CHAMPIONS VAR | MARVEL COMICS | 2023
By: Lefteros
Yet another character introduced on a Marvel New Champions Variant will be making their way into pages of multiple upcoming comic books. That character is Fantasma, a young female Ghost Rider who first appeared on the cover of this variant by Luciano Vecchio.
We have confirmation that not only will she be making her first full in-story appearance in the upcoming Ghost Rider: Robbie Reyes Special #1, slated to release on October 2nd, but she will also be part of a new superhero team that, according to Marvel, will change the world in 2025. We have seen plenty of New Champions characters see their variants gain traction as they have been introduced in comic books, and Fantasma may be next. You can still pick this one up on eBay for cover price. We are watching!

CONTENT/SERIES: BRZRKR ANIME/LIVE ACTION PRODUCTION
For fans of BRZRKR, SDCC gave us all good news. Per animemojo.com, Keanu Reeves announced that the anime spin-off series will begin production this fall. Terminator Zero screenwriter Mattson Tomlin also announced that he has turned in a script for the live-action movie for Netflix.

CONTENT/RELEASED SCENE: DEATH OF SUPERMAN
Premiering this October, the final season of Superman and Lois (arguably CW’s best overall superhero shows from start to finish) will have the Death of Superman storyline start the season. The clip CW released shows Superman and Doomsday battling across the solar system and the CGI looks fantastic (and better than some DC movies right now).
