SHAKER: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #5 - SIMONE DI MEO - SHOWCASE COVER: SPIKE - VIRGIN | BOOM! STUDIOS | 2019
By Ron Reyes
This week, we are thrilled to showcase a striking exclusive by Simone Di Meo created for WhedonCon 2019, which recently achieved a remarkable price of $350 Raw—an all-time high! Have you ever heard of WhedonCon? This vibrant convention embarked on its journey in 2016, celebrating the imaginative works inspired by the Buffy universe. With a commitment to philanthropy, the event has generously supported local charities, channeling proceeds to worthwhile causes. After a brief hiatus from 2019 to 2022, brought on by the pandemic, the convention returned triumphantly in 2023, reimagined as the Sunnydale Homecoming. Last year, it embraced a new identity as HellmouthCon, and plans are underway for this year's gathering, scheduled for June 13-15, 2025. Set against the iconic Torrance High School backdrop, the convention promises fans an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in panels and activities. What truly elevates this experience is the chance to stand in the very location where the beloved show was filmed. Buffyheads can geek out and forge connections with fellow enthusiasts in a place steeped in nostalgia. The thrill of being amongst kindred spirits in this setting creates an atmosphere that celebrates the creative environment and the passionate community that continues to flourish around it. You can expect more of these higher-valued Buffy titles to spike with the upcoming show due to release soon!

SHAKER: COMIX INTERNATIONAL #1 | WARREN | 1974
Comix International ran for only five issues and reprinted material from Warren Publishing like Eerie, Creepy, and Vampirella in color. The first issue featured the work of Richard Corben, best known for his art in Heavy Metal Magazine and being elected into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2012. Other artists featured in subsequent issues were Bernie Wrightson, Jeff Jones, and Wally Wood. Although issue #1 isn’t that rare, it is a hard-to-find book in a high grade, as the front cover is white while the back cover is black. There are 40 graded universal copies on the CGC census, with only four graded at 9.6 and none at 9.8. The highest-graded sale we have recorded was a 9.2 that sold for $149 in 2021. This week, a raw NM copy sold for an all-time high (albeit by $1) of $150. All the books in the series can currently be found on eBay, but the key is finding these in high grade as the CGC census for each book is extremely low, and a graded 9.8 should command a huge price tag.

SHAKER: DAREDEVIL #1 - NEAL ADAMS (1:75) | MARVEL | 2011
Aside from the Born Again storyline, Mark Waid’s run on Daredevil was the series people kept recommending when I started reading more Marvel comics. In addition to Waid’s storytelling, the interiors, and covers by Paolo Rivera immediately drew readers into Matt Murdock’s double life of a lawyer moonlighting as a superhero. At the time of release, only a handful of variants were available for this relaunch of Daredevil, including a blank sketch cover, a second print, and covers by Marcos Martin, John Romita, and this relatively high ratio cover by Neal Adams. Adams crossed over to both Marvel and DC Comics decades before it was normal, and in his later years, provided cover work for both companies, including this hard-to-find gem.
In the past five years, there have only been a few documented sales of this book. In 2020, a raw sold for $25, while a 9.2 graded copy was purchased for $275. In 2023, those prices vanished as someone paid $609 for a raw copy. Later that year, a 9.8 graded copy sold for just over $1,200. This week, the book set a new high when a 9.6-graded copy sold for an astonishing $1,500.

SHAKER: FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH (OF ARMY OF DARKNESS) #1 - 2ND PRINTING | DC | 2008
For horror fans and J. Scott Campbell fans, of which there is an innumerably large number of each, this book hits extremely hard. Crossovers can come off as hacky to some, but Freddy and Jason have long been pitted against each other, and I don't think you're legally allowed to complain about Evil Dead in any way, shape, or form. Pair these three horror legends with J. Scott Campbell, and this comic is immediately iconic. You may have noticed that this is the second printing of the book, which usually doesn't help the collectability. However, the cover of this one is super interesting and unique. The original printing was produced in three variants, with covers featuring Freddy, Jason, and Ash, respectively. The second printing combined the artwork of each and displayed them horizontally, somewhat akin to a large splash page, which is incredibly unusual and fun for a comic book cover. For those that the book resonates with, some have even gone so far as to say it's their favorite Campbell cover (I'm looking at you, Matt DeVoe)! Over the past few years, we have definitely been living in somewhat of a horror renaissance, and with books from the early 2000s starting to become harder to come by in good condition, prices for books like these have been steadily rising. A raw NM copy of this book just sold for $178, which is creeping dangerously close to the graded 9.8 price of around $150.

SHAKER: G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #252 - WARREN LOUW - KRS COMICS - VIRGIN COVER B (LIMITED 250) | IDW | 2018
By Xavier
The Baroness, a name that sends chills down those in her crosshairs, stands as one of Cobra's most iconic and formidable agents. Anastasia Cisarovna, as she is also known, is far more than just a pretty face; she's a master of espionage, a skilled combatant, and a cunning strategist. Among other features, her signature look, sleek leather, and jet-black hair are illustrated beautifully on this Louw exclusive cover. This issue is highly coveted by GI Joe fans, but even more so for fans of The Baroness. It is a rare find, being only limited to 250 copies and being a store exclusive. It is one of two covers that KRS Comics released, with the Cover A releasing with trade dress but still as popular as this cover. Raw NM copies of this book sell for a FMV of $100. This past week, a CGC 9.8 graded copy sold for $350! That is a nice return on investment and also a new all-time high! The last sale for this 9.8 grade was back in 2018 for $111. There are only 26 graded copies of this book, according to the CGC census, and 21 are graded at a 9.8. Although Transformers has been relatively quiet since the reveal of a future GI Joe crossover at the end of Rise of the Beasts, GI Joe books haven't been heavily dependent on media news. GI Joe fans are as hardcore as the comic characters and are always hunting down great covers in the series!

SHAKER: THE INCREDIBLE HULK #1 | NEWTON COMICS | 1974
By Matthew Glover Esq.
Maxwell Newton holds a notorious place in comic book history. His brief but impactful 18-month stint as a publisher in Australia from 1975 to 1976 left a lasting mark on both readers and the industry. At the time, Newton was a newspaper publisher searching for additional work to keep his printing presses running. Seizing an opportunity, he covertly arranged for Marvel Comics to be reprinted and distributed across Australia. Printed in black and white, these editions offered more pages by combining multiple stories, featured fewer advertisements, and even included extras such as pull-out posters, iron-on transfers, and swap cards. More importantly, they were far more affordable than their American counterparts, making them the first introduction to Marvel's heroes for many Australian children. During his short-lived publishing venture, Newton produced an astonishing 180 different comic magazines. However, his extravagant lifestyle—marked by alcoholism, suicide attempts, and even a brief foray into pimping—combined with his decision to keep all profits from Marvel's reprints, ultimately led to his downfall. Facing the consequences of his actions, he fled Australia, abruptly ending one of the most fascinating and controversial chapters in Australian comic book history. Covrprice covered another Newton Comic back in December of 2021. Check out the e-book "Newton Comics - The Amazing Rise & Spectacular Fall" by Daniel Best for the incredible full story. Recently, a Hulk #1 from Newton Comics smashed its way onto the Shaker list with an all-time high of $1,045 in a CGC 5.5.

SHAKER: MOVIE STAR NEWS #1 - DAVE STEVENS | PURE IMAGINATION | 1990
The Dave Stevens hysteria has died down as his books haven’t been featured as much lately on the Weekly Shakers Report. Other artists such as Skottie Young and, most recently, Mark Speers have taken the market by storm and have been hitting all-time highs for various books, both new and old. Stevens has returned to the Shakers as his cover for Movie Star News #1 sold for a record $375 for a graded 9.8. Movie Star News began as a bookstore in New York City in 1938 by Irving Klaw, who would go on to be nick-named the “Pin-up King.” The struggling bookstore transitioned to selling movie star stills and lobby photo cards, eventually amassing a presence as a mail-order company. Although he worked with many models, Bettie Page became his most popular model, and Movie Star News #1 featured a catalog of Betty Paige photos in a pamphlet-sized book and was only published as a one-off issue. Dave Stevens became the perfect artist to bring Betty Paige to life in the comic book world, so it’s no surprise this book is catching fire.

SHAKER: PROMETHEUS: FIRE AND STONE, OMEGA - PATRIC REYNOLDS - 2015 EMERALD CITY COMIC CON (LIMITED 500) | DARK HORSE | 2015
By Ron Reyes
As you can imagine, rarity breeds value, and, as such, Con Exclusives can be a rare breed indeed! This week, we have a unique ECCC 2015 entry from Patric Reynolds for Prometheus: Fire and Stone Omega. This title may not be immediately recognizable, but Dark Horse Comics has established a prominent reputation for transforming popular media into comic book form. Following the release of the thought-provoking science fiction horror film Prometheus in 2012, the publisher seized the opportunity to delve deeper into the franchise. This strategic move was especially fitting, as Dark Horse also held the rights to the iconic Alien series, allowing them to explore the rich universe created by Ridley Scott. In 2014, Dark Horse Comics launched Prometheus: Fire and Stone, an ambitious exploration of the film's lore that expanded the existing narrative. This was followed in 2015 by a spinoff one-shot titled Omega. Recently, a dedicated collector made headlines this week by scoring a record-breaking sale of this Emerald City Comic Con Exclusive for $270 Raw!

SHAKER: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #23 - SKOTTIE YOUNG VARIANT | MARVEL | 2013
On the heels of the 'Dying Wish' arc, Superior Spider-Man was the talk of the comic world. Otto Octavius would take on the mantle of Spider-Man and become the 'Superior' Spider-Man, after he swapped his consciousness with Parker's in order to keep himself alive. The idea behind the series was initially met with negative responses from fans and critics alike, but as the series progressed, it started to receive positive buzz. This week, a variant of issue #23 of this series hit an all-time high raw sale of $137. This marks only the fourth documented sale of this variant, with all four sales being of raw copies. The biggest drive behind the sale is likely the combination of scarcity and cover art from the ever-popular Skottie Young. Young's older covers continue to hit big numbers in the aftermarket, and this issue's big-time sales are no exception. This book also happens to mark the first time that Superior Spider-Man becomes Superior Venom, making this an even more exciting and sought-after cover for any Young, Spidey, or Venom fan.

SHAKER: THE TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE #12 - CASEY COLLER - RETAILER INCENTIVE BEATLES HOMAGE (1:10) | IDW | 2012
By Van Denby
The Transformers are one of the linchpins of 80s pop culture. The comics, toys, and cartoons featuring the Autobots and Decepticons were prized possessions and memories for many 80s babies. The popularity of the brand has evolved and led to Transformers being more widely seen in the past 20 years. The live-action films, toys, and other merchandise have expanded the Transformers from what was once mostly an 80s thing into a much larger universe and fanbase. Transformers comics have also expanded and evolved as well. From the first Marvel issue in 1984 to the most recent Skybound books, Transformers have had many publishers and storylines throughout the years. As the brand has grown, many important comics and rare variants have become increasingly harder to find. As these books slip into collections, prices increase as demand swells. One variant that has increased is the Casey Coller 1:10 variant for Transformers More Than Meets The Eye #12, which features an excellent homage to the Sgt. Peppers album by the Beatles. This variant was part of the IDW Rock Tour variant set, last mentioned HERE and also a handful of other times HERE. The variants in this set have all increased in value with some of them even reaching over $1K for graded copies. This past week, the aforementioned Coller variant reached a new high when a NM raw copy sold for $150 as well. These books seem to pop up for sale less often, and in many cases, each time there is a new listing, there is a new high sale.

SHAKER: VAMPIRELLA #7 - JENNY FRISON VIRGIN VARIANT (1:50) | DYNAMITE | 2014
By Van Denby
Jenny Frison is an artist who is mentioned a lot on our Shaker Reports. Her fans seem to be ever-growing, and with an expanding fanbase comes more sought-after work. Her earlier covers on titles such as Vampirella and Red Sonja have seen an increase in demand, thus causing higher asking prices from sellers. We last discussed one of these books in October, when the focus was on the ultra-rare variant for Vampirella #5. That issue joined the ranks of other virgin variants from that series, such as issues #3 and #6, both of which carry higher price tags. This past week, yet another ultra-rare variant from that series saw a price increase when a graded CGC 9.8 copy of issue #7 sold for $485. This sale set a new all-time high for this book. It will be interesting to see if the trend of these "limited to 50 copies" variants continues, and if so, which ultra-rare variant is next?

SHAKER: X-MEN #307 - PRESSMAN VARIANT | MARVEL | 1993
The 90s were full of promotions that required the collection of caps, cutouts, coupons, and more to be sent back to a manufacturer for a sweet prize. This book is in the same vein but slightly different. The only way to get this special variant was to purchase a board game and submit the voucher to Pressman, the producer of the game. However, this comic wasn’t necessarily super important to collectors at that time, as it featured a deep gold color vs a normal yellow cover, and neither was the board game in the age of X-Men arcade cabinets. It left us with a limited market in the present, with a CGC 9.8 copy recently selling for $595. It’s the highest sale in our database, with the last high sale being a CGC 9.6 for $200 late last year. Raw copies can be easily had for under $75, but the condition often suffers. That 9.8 grade is difficult to get, but not out of the question. With 99 copies on the census, 21 are CGC 9.8, or roughly 20%. This book is another relic of the 90s, but one a collector was willing to open their wallet for!

KEY OF THE WEEK
MICKEY MOUSE MAGAZINE [SECOND SERIES] #8 | DISNEY | 1935
Before Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories became one of the best-selling comic books of all time, Mickey Mouse Magazine laid the foundation. This early Disney publication evolved from a promotional giveaway into a full-fledged newsstand magazine featuring stories, puzzles, and comic panels promoting Disney films and products. The second series (1933-1935) was distributed through local dairies, making copies particularly scarce today. A CGC 8.0 copy recently sold for $1,150, setting the record as the highest-known sale. This issue has only two other recorded sales—both raw: $227.45 in January 2024 and $423 in December 2018. Demand clearly outweighs supply, with only five copies on the CGC census, and this sale represents one of just two in the highest known grade. Given its origin as a free promotional item, high-grade copies are especially rare, making this sale a standout event in Disney collectibles. With vintage Disney memorabilia continuing to command strong prices, Mickey Mouse Magazine holds historical significance as the precursor to Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories. As collectors hunt for early Disney artifacts, this issue’s record-setting sale could signal a growing market for pre-Golden Age Disney publications. For those investing in vintage comics, this is a prime example of historical scarcity driving value.

WHAT THE WATCHER WATCHES

STAR WARS: BATTLE OF JAKKU – INSURGENCY RISING #1 | MARVEL | 2024
By: Lefteros
Lots of Star Wars comic books feature first appearances. This is by design, after all, they are exploring a galaxy, so meeting new characters is to be expected. However, it is important to note that not all of these characters are created equal. Some of them are around for one story never to be heard from again, and others Marvel has more grand plans for.
When this issue first dropped, it was Ubrik Adelhard and Bragh that caught my attention, but the real prize appears to be the Rebel pilot known as Rynn Zenat. At first, I figured she was created for the Battle of Jakku, but as the story went on and as her relationship with Luke Skywalker developed, it became clear there may be more to her. Sure enough, it looks like Marvel will continue to build around this character in the upcoming ongoing Star Wars series that takes place after Return of Jedi.
Will Star Wars books start getting attention again soon? I think it's only a matter of time. For now, print runs are low, and notable first appearances like this Rynn Zenat may end up being sought after in the long run. We are watching!
