Janine meets American soldier Fred in France during the war. Afterwards, she travels to the USA to marry him, but Fred is killed in a freak accident on the docks as she arrives. To avoid returning to France, Janine accepts the marriage proposal of wealthy French immigrant Aristide. He installs her on the Cummings farm, where she falls in love with Tony. However, Aristide returns and she agrees to wed him out of gratitude. A dream about Fred convinces her that she should marry the man she really loves: Tony.; College student Judy turns down Bill’s marriage proposal because she wants to finish her degree and start a career. He gets engaged to Ann on the rebound, then Judy admits she wants him back. When Ann humiliates Judy during a class, Bill breaks up with her and reconciles with Judy.; Frank and Dottie get married even though he worries he can’t support them both on his salary. After the wedding, Frank feels guilty his wife can’t have nice things, so he begins to embezzle money from his job. When he’s injured in a car accident, Frank's replacement discovers the thefts. Frank is sent to prison for 3 years, but vows never to disappoint his wife again after he’s released.; Bill dumps Kitty to marry the wealthy Helen. Jed falls in love with Kitty and proposes to her, even though she says she still loves Bill. She accepts but after the wedding tells Jed that she has to see Bill, to find out if their love is still strong. Bill claims he loves Kitty and suggests they have an affair, while each taking money from their rich spouses. Kitty rejects him and returns to Jed, whom she now loves.; Sue’s parents forbid her to date Greg, so she goes out with Bruce (who makes an indecent proposal) and Craig (who's married), neither of whom is worthy of her. She then falls in love with Larry, her art teacher. Sue overhears her parents saying they've been just trying to protect her from making the same bad decisions they did, but have failed. Sue tells them that they can work things out, and when Larry arrives her parents are understanding.
