Annie and Tagg find a steer with a message branded on it with a running iron saying "Dying - BB shot LS". Annie's neighbor is Luke Simmons and when they go to check they find that Bat Braddock is in charge of the Simmons ranch and Simmons is missing. Annie goes to town to get advice from Colonel Dyke, not knowing that Dyke is a partner with Braddock in the scheme.; Annie is working as a sharpshooter in her uncle's traveling carnival, when she receives a telegram that she has inherited a ranch from a distant relative. It is located near Gunsight, "the toughest town west of the Pecos". She and her brother Tagg leave to settle on the ranch, not knowing that gold has been discovered there. Eli Bolton sends a thug to find out some information on Annie, but he is fooled by a gag photo for a store contest. When the stage to Gunsight is attacked by Indians, Annie drives them off, then takes over for an injured Pony Express rider. After arriving with the mail at Gunsight, she later surprises Bolton's gang, who expect her to be in the stagecoach when it arrives.
