Dale's neighbor Jacques Redeau, the lacemaker, is ill and Dale brings him some soup. Redeau tells Dale the story of how he had lost contact with his daughter Violet when the relatives she was staying with in Belgium had gone to America and taken her with them. Redeau had later sold an invention and came to the States, but was not able to find his daughter. Dale gets a story printed in the newspaper, which draws two responses--the real Violet and an impostor.; Bandits rob the bank as Dale is depositing the café's money for the day. The bandits get away, but not before Dale observes that the leader has red suspenders. Afterward she befriends a lonely orphan who has been sent from Europe to live with his uncle. Dale takes the boy back to his uncle, but is greeted by a warning shot by a man in red suspenders. Later the orphan overhears his uncle and his friends plot to rob Dale's café and he goes to warn her.
