Wendy thinks Rick has romantic possibilities.; Kathy teaches at the state agricultural college. She turns down the advances of Blakesly, but finds herself attracted to Ned, a farmer who won a special scholarship to the school. Ned and Kathy fall in love. Blakesly catches them and the dean says either Kathy or Ned must leave. Ned departs, but when he later discovers the cure for a crop blight, he says Kathy’s influence was vital to his success. Ned returns to the college and punches Blakesly, then reunites with Kathy.; Carol becomes engaged to Clyde out of gratitude for everything he has done for her family. He asks her to come to Colorado, where he works in a mining camp, to marry him. Carol and mine worker Jeff fall in love, but she still feels obliged to marry Clyde. When Jeff is trapped in a mine accident, Carol shames Clyde into risking his life to save him. Carol and Jeff admit their love, while Clyde will be consoled by Sybil, the mine owner’s daughter.; Katie inherits a run-down diner. Over her boyfriend Jerry’s objections, she quits her office job and decides to run it with the assistance of employee Pete.
