After growing up in poverty, Ruth suddenly becomes wealthy when her father strikes oil. Steven is hired to tutor Ruth so she can fit in with high society. Ruth and Steven fall in love, but he refuses to marry her until he can support her. Unknown to Steve, Ruth’s father gets Steven a university job and Steven and Ruth are wed. Steve’s ex-girlfriend reveals the truth and Steven is angry, but then learns he was already chosen for the job before Ruth’s father donated money to hire him.; Lila and artist Alan fall in love, but her father opposes the match, since Lila’s older sister Pearl is unhappily married to an artist. However, when Alan rescues Pop from drowning, Pop changes his opinion and gives his blessing to Alan and Lila.; Adrianne hires struggling lawyer Phelps as her partner in a home-services business, but he makes it clear he wants their relationship to be strictly business. Adrianne becomes jealous when wealthy summer resident Selma sets her cap for Phelps, but he tells Adrianne that he was just using Selma to get her rich father as a client for his law practice. Phelps and Adrianne admit they love each other.; Beautiful chorus girl Monica marries playboy Mort, against the advice of her friends. After the wedding, a drunken Mort wrecks their auto and Monica’s face is badly scarred. Mort says she looks "horrible," and dumps her. Plastic surgeon Russell operates on Monica but has to report for military service before he sees the results. Monica, beautiful once again, resumes her dancing career but wears various masks as a gimmick. Russell returns and sees his work. He and Monica will be married.
