Carol takes the job of librarian in the small town of Hollisville. She’s warned that her private life must be exemplary. Carol dates handsome Andrew and is also the object of the romantic advances of bank president and library board chairman Victor. Victor says Andrew is a drunkard and Carol must break up with him to save her job. Carol does, but also rejects Victor’s marriage proposal, so he sends two thugs to wreck the library. Andrew proves Victor is to blame. Andrew is not a drunk, he's a doctor testing a drug to cure alcoholism. Andrew and Carol reconcile.; Carol, a junior fashion designer, refuses to marry architect Bill until she proves she “can be equally successful at a job of my own,” believing he won’t respect her otherwise. Carol buys some dress designs from novice Faith, passing them off as her own work, and is promoted at work. Faith shows up later because she needs more money for her sick father, and Bill learns the truth. He breaks up with Carol. Carol sells her wedding trousseau and gives the money to Faith. When Bill finds out, he asks Carol to marry him and she agrees.; Diner waitress Mimi splurges on a gown and enviously observes the fancy Moonlight Ball, only to be invited inside by Craig. Mimi lets Craig believe she’s a wealthy society girl. They fall in love, but when Mimi brings up marriage, Craig says he can’t marry her. She thinks he knows about her subterfuge and they break up. A year later, she goes back to the Moonlight Ball and is accosted by a masher, who is put in his place by a nearby cab driver. It’s Craig: he’s a poor working man just like Mimi. They are reunited.; Nurse Lisa and Dr. Donald are in love, but his busy schedule gives them no time for marriage. Lisa finally makes an "emergency" call to bring Donald to her apartment. They get married the next morning.; Marilee tells her mother she broke up with her boyfriend because he was complimenting another girl, even though she had just finished complimenting another boy. Marilee's mother advises her daughter to call her boyfriend and apologize.
