Lonnie and Jeanne alert all of a cougar they found who has been following the wagon train killing livestock, Ranger removes Silver's saddle, who tracks and fights it, one of the pioneers fells it with a rifle. Ranger tells kids how wild Silver once tracked a man, Apache horse hunter Keenay. Keenay rebuilds his teepee lodge, spies colts Scamper and Silver, captures Scamper, uses him to lure Silver, who defeats the traps and frees Scamper, tracks Keenay, destroys the new lodge. Keenay's next trap is foiled, too, and he ends up plucking porcupine quills from his skin, while Silver remains free.; Lonnie falls off his horse, saddle girth broken. Jeanne falls off her horse into the creek, hits head on rock, Silver rescues her. Sleeping six-year-old Martha on folks' mare Nellie with corn sacks got separated from the wagons. Up arroyo, a coyote's howl sent Nellie running, and Martha awoke. Silver, protector of his band, investigates. He accepts Nellie, the other mares tear at the corn sacks, Martha is unseated, stranded. Four big buffalo wolves scent her, close in, she cries for help. Silver saves her, kills wolves. Search party finds her, evidence corroborates her tale of Silver's deed.; Silver helps a colt who falls in the water. Ranger tells kids how yearling Silver and mother Moussa hid from Cheyenne in an arroyo, thence to the river, into which Sylvan drives five mares and himself jumps the arroyo's high rock top, fleeing the party of Cheyenne.
