Mary graduates from college and takes a teaching job in the rural town of Pinesville. She tutors farmer Jim, which provokes a “whispering campaign” by jealous Peggy. Jim proposes to Mary but she turns him down. Peggy snares him on the rebound. Mary resigns her position, but Jim makes her realise she does love him. They get married and Jim eventually becomes a doctor.; Rusty refuses to date anyone unless they spend money on her, so the local men convince newcomer Gil to pretend to be wealthy and go out with her and teach her a lesson. She accepts his invitation, only to discover he’s taking her to a barn dance. On their next date, they go to a fancy club but Gil has to borrow money from her to pay the bill. Rusty realises she enjoys his company, not the places Gil takes her, and they admit they love each other.; Connie agrees to escort newcomer Bruce to a skating party so he can meet Phyllis, the most popular girl in their high school. Phyllis uses Bruce to promote her candidacy for school president, but discards him when his usefulness is over. Bruce then understands Connie is a much better person than Phyllis and they decide to go steady. Connie is also nominated to oppose Phyllis in the school election.; Secretary Joyce becomes engaged to her boss David. She claims her family is also high society, but in truth her mother is a scrub woman who scrimps to buy Joyce nice clothes. When Joyce’s mother is injured, David takes her to a hospital and Joyce thinks he won’t care for her any more. She moves to another city but her brother finds her and says David still loves her and everyone wants her to come home.; Department store clerk Cathy doesn’t want her fellow worker Jane to meet her boyfriend Bill, fearing Jane will steal him away. Jane and Bill become friends; after Cathy sees them together, she frames Jane for stealing at work. Then she learns Jane and Bill were just preparing a surprise birthday party for her. Cathy confesses to the scheme, but Jane understands her motivation and forgives her. Cathy goes on to marry Bill, thanks to Jane’s generosity.
