Chris and Irene are raised by their mother for show business careers. However, she decides love comes first, which provokes a bitter argument with Irene. After the wedding, Sam arranges a reconciliation between Chris and Irene.; Helen has a scar on her face, the result of a childhood accident. She can’t afford plastic surgery, but family friend Jed (a former circus clown) shows her how to use makeup to hide the scar. Moving to another town where no one knows her, Helen dates deliveryman Johnny. However, he hates dishonest people and Helen is afraid to tell him the truth about her face. She decides to leave town but is badly injured in a car accident; the insurance pays for plastic surgery on her face. Helen confesses to Johnny that she had a scar before, proving she’s an honest person. They will be married.; After her father’s death, Peggy has to forego college and work to support her mother and younger sister Nila. Peggy wants to marry Frankie, but her mother forbids it. Peggy’s mother spends freely on Nila, denying Peggy any luxuries. When Lee proposes to Peggy, her mother says they can’t get by without her salary. Peggy tells Lee she’d like to keep working and have her mother live with them after the wedding, but he says her family are “leeches!” Peggy pretends to be sick and confronts her mother and sister with their selfishness. They apologise and Peggy will now marry Lee and be happy.; Claire grows up in poverty, caring for her invalid father and berated by her stepmother. Her father tells her to “get the things she wants” in life and commits suicide so he won’t be a burden. Claire sets out to seduce her boss John, and he proposes marriage to her. Fellow employee Steve knows Claire’s plan and blackmails her into going on a date with him: he admits he loves Claire but can’t give her the luxurious life she wants. Claire confesses all to John, and he admits he knew what she was doing, but loved her anyway. He sets her free to reunite with Steve.
